Mission Statement
The project is written and directed by a bisexual latina and features queer women of color. The film is produced by Nite Fix Productions, the LGBTQ+ company behind the LGBTQ+ slasher flick Killer Unicorn, and Mattioli Productions, founded by acclaimed trans filmmaker AJ Mattioli.About The Project
THE STORY
“A Single Evening” is a musical short film about dating and loneliness. It follows Minnie, a single woman, attempting to fulfill the longing for touch and companionship without sacrificing her standards. Dating apps flood her with potential candidates, friends go on dates instead of hanging out, and the fear that she will always be alone haunts her. Minnie spends the evening cycling through the emotions, ultimately searching for a way to be alone without feeling lonely.
TONE & STYLE
This is a dark romantic comedy with alternative R&B songs. We’re taking a surreal and nuanced approach, visually exploring emotional currents of loneliness and longing through choreography and thematic montage. The dialogue and story are playful and crude, with elements of satire. With personified dating apps and profiles coming to life, Minnie gets sucked into a world of hook-ups and fake romance and we get to watch.
WHY NOW?
A note from the writer/director:
Ever felt pressured to be in a relationship? Or that something was wrong with you if you weren't in one? You're not alone. I wrote this musical years ago when I was struggling with online dating. I thought dating apps would be the answer to feeling alone, but it was just making things worse. When I shared the musical with friends, they related to it, sparking conversations about the correlation between dating and loneliness. So now we want to bring this musical to life and keep that conversation going, but we can’t do it without your help.
Dedicated to those who have ever felt that dating was the only way to avoid being lonely, we hope this film serves as a reminder that you are not alone. By helping us reach our goal, you’ll be part of something that’s timely and important to those struggling to find solace in independence.
MEET THE CHARACTERS
Rebecca Hidalgo as "Minnie"
Minnie is a doubtful romantic. She’s been single for a hot minute, and with all of her friends going out on dates, she feels the pressure to be in a relationship, with the hope that it will save her from loneliness. She’s often blunt and honest, but her yearning for attention and companionship causes her to question if she should exchange the safety of solace for the promise of touch.
Karolena Theresa as "Kasey a.k.a. OKC"
Kasey is the personification of a popular dating app called 'OkeedokeCupid.' She’s a natural matchmaker and always the life of the party. Her whole purpose is pulling Minnie into the dating world, convincing her to give in to the process and keep trying.
Ashley Monique Menard as "Ms. Match"
Ms. Match is the embodiment of a dating website called 'MatchforTrueLove.com.' She believes true love is affordable at a reasonable price because it's so worth it to find your soulmate! She's very convincing and loves bragging about how many couples she's matched. Could you be next?
Chris Jehnert as "Tim" and Jenna Sofia as "Drea"
Tim and Drea are a duo that represent the popular app 'TinderandSpark.' They believe in no-strings-attached hook-ups and are all about tempting you to the dark side of a one-night stand. They are extremely confident and always DTF.
Jillian Vitko as "Lana"
Lana is one of Minnie's roommates. She's a peppy and lively serial dater, always on the prowl for the next date. She's on several apps and enjoys spending the night at someone else's place, all in the name of fun and the potential for romance.
José Alvarez as "Adam"
Adam is one of Minnie's roommates. He's extremely empathetic and a good listener. He usually stays home painting, unless someone from the 'Grindme' app hits him up (which is very often).
WHAT WE NEED
Filmmaking is an amazing artistic experience but is also very expensive. While we have a fantastic cast and crew lined up, there are a still a few things we need to bring this project to life. We need to rent camera gear, lights, a gear van, and we'll need production insurance. We'd also love to be able to pay our talented cast and crew and feed them. The pie chart below shows exactly how we've allocated our budget.
