Mission Statement
In a heteronormative genre like the romantic comedy, queer youth in particular are denied stories that affirm their identities. Please consider supporting Admit One. The LGBTQ community deserves sappy, feel-good, fairytale endings too!About The Project
You Had me at “Western-Sci-Fi”
"ADMIT ONE" is the story of Piper, an anti-romantic caught falling for the girl behind the snack counter at her favorite movie theater. As Piper struggles to resist love at first sight, she must battle her way through a Western shoot-out and an Alien Invasion in the lobby of the theater, before finally learning to accept the romance of it all -- and the romantic comedy genre itself.
At the ticket booth, straight couples ahead of Piper buy tickets to “The Actually Crazy, Stupid Proposal in 10 Days”. Instead, Piper (who isn’t the cheesy romantic-type) rolls her eyes and buys two tickets to “Blazing Grit on the Open Range”. Piper enters the lobby of the theater which has now transformed into a saloon! The ticket-taker tips his hat. The following action is storyboarded:
After this sequence, Piper becomes caught in the midst of a Western shoot-out, but Cece saves the day when she lassos Piper out of the way. Before Piper can hand Cece the second ticket, Piper is swept away into the auditorium of the theater!
The next evening Piper returns - haphazardly buying two tickets to “Alien Odyssey of the Third Kind“ - and hurrying into the now misty and green-lit lobby. Strange creatures crowd the scene holding fluorescent candies, sodas that look like lava lamps, and blue popcorn.
After a quirky miscommunication with Cece (who’s now an alien), Piper is sucked away by a tractor beam. She can’t give Cece the ticket, but she does get a glimpse of her name tag. It lists her name and favorite movie: When Harry Met Sally.
On Piper’s final attempt, she buys into the romance of it all and hesitantly asks the box office for “Two tickets to... When Piper Met Cece?” A parody of the finale of When Harry Met Sally, Piper fights her way through a crowd of New Year’s Eve partygoers toward Cece. Finally handing her the ticket, Piper pulls Cece in for a kiss just as the clock strikes midnight.
“Chewie, set our coordinates for Gardena Cinema, and make the jump to lightspeed!”
A significant production cost, our location is locked for our (3) February shoot dates. Gardena Cinema is a family-owned, eclectic, single-screen theater that perfectly fits the artistic aesthetic of “Admit One”.
“May we take your ticket?”
With your contribution, you are supporting LGBTQ+ representation in front of and behind the camera. As a bisexual growing up in Indiana, I know I wished for more queer stories (that didn’t end in tragedy) on the big screen. Please consider supporting Admit One, because the LGBTQ+ community deserves sappy, feel-good, fairytale endings too!
