The Story
After her mother's death, Natalia rebuilds her relationship with her father Maurice.
SUMMARY: Emerging from a storm of incredible loss Natalia attends her mother’s funeral. Body to ashes, she weathers mourner after mourner alone while her emotionally avoidant father Maurice hides in the shadow of his wife’s passing. Without her mother to bridge their relationship, Natalia and Maurice collide at long last, unraveling years of hurt, resentment, and misunderstanding. Neither can admit nor communicate how much they need each other until Natalia uncovers the severity of her father’s situation. They piece together their relationship according to new rules based on new roles. We blink and our children become capable adults. Meanwhile, our parents are as vulnerable as we once were...an inevitability reminding us that nothing in life is permanent.
WORDS FROM THE WRITER: "Growing up my father was my best friend, he was everything to me, but as I got older it became rare for us to have a conversation that didn’t end in a fight. We were stuck in a cycle. We’d argue, I’d storm out, we spoke less. Finally, I asked myself, ‘how did we get here?’.
So I started thinking: What if my mom wasn’t around to bridge the gap? How could my father and I rebuild our relationship? As the years pass, eventually, our roles will reverse. What would that look like?
Nothing in life is permanent. Whether you like it or not, whether you are ready for it or not, your relationship with your parents will evolve. And you have a choice: you can keep feeding the resentment and frustration until it’s too late, or heal with it while you still have the time to do so.” ~ Nicole Ohara
TONE: Sentimental. Honest. A mediation on love and loss, grief and healing. Ashes is a cinematic tone poem that every parent-child relationship can relate to. It is deeply mournful with a sense of humor because life is just funny that way.
NATALIA: Mid to late 20s. Natalia is serious and responsible. Recently parted from her partner Penny after a late-pregnancy miscarriage, Natalia appears resilient, and often stoic - seemingly taking her mother's death in strides. She has a difficult time connecting with her father. She resents his detachment from her life. She wants her father to want to get to know her, his support and warmth. She needs to know that he loves her, but she has difficulty finding the words to ask him. She is her father’s daughter after all.
MAURICE: Late 60s early 70s. Maurice is a private and proud man incapable of asking for help. He’s become bitter over the years and the death of his wife was the straw that broke the camel’s back. He does not see anything wrong with his relationship with Natalia. Getting to know her is irrelevant. She is his daughter. What more is there to discuss? Emotionally barren Maurice does not have the tools to tell his daughter he loves her, but memories of her childhood warm his heart. His baby girl is all grown up, and he must learn to build a new bond with the adult she’s become.
