The Story
An ambitious, high achieving employee who suffers a mental break on the day of his dream promotion. What should be an exciting day for Clay turns into a nightmare as the mask that he wears to the world begins to crack.
WHY NOW?
This project is important and timely because it aims to increase awareness of mental health struggles in the African American and the broader American community.
According to the CDC, the second leading cause of death for African Americans, ages 15 to 24 was suicide in 2019. Additionally, suicide rates among African American men were four times greater than African American women in 2018.
One person dies due to suicide every 11 minutes in the United States.
And the number of people who consider or attempt suicide is even greater, making suicide a leading cause of death in the United States.
Help further the conversation about mental health trauma and the importance of seeking healing. Your support will help Black Butterfly reach individuals suffering in silence and combat the stigma of mental illness within the African American community and beyond.
We Have Three Varied Budgets. The Third Is Our Ultimate Goal.
In these challenging times, any contribution is greatly appreciated. We hope that you are able to partner with us to increase vital resources for the creatives involved and elevate the production value of the film.
Varied Budgets
1. MIN: This budget ($6,500) allows us to cover basic essentials and pay our talented cast and crew a small honorarium.
2. MID: If we hit our mid goal ($10,000), we can use additional funds to secure shoot locations, hire the full crew we need, compensating essential crew, and rent specialized camera equipment.
3. IDEAL: Should we meet our goal of $15,000, we can fund critical post production expenses (editing, color correction, sound design, etc.) and cover film festival entry fees and related distribution costs.
DIRECTOR STATEMENT
Kelvin Summerhill
I have been telling stories since I was a little boy growing up in Huntsville, Alabama. I can remember spending hours in my room living out exciting and imaginative story lines with my huge collection of action figures. My love for photography and film was also launched during my early years as my imagination would become fully immersed in mostly science fiction movies.
While I've always been engrossed with Sci-Fi content, most of the characters on screen didn't look like me. And I'm going to change that one film, one screenplay, one tv series at a time!
That's why I entered the University of Georgia's new MFA in FIlm and TV program to hone my craft for this powerful medium that I love.
COVID PROTOCOLS
I entered film school during the first year of the Covid-19 pandemic because I knew the power of learning the craft of storytelling. Two years later, the world is still battling Covid and I'm making my MFA thesis film with the hope that it will save lives.
Please know that we are following all Covid guidelines and requirements mandated by the CDC, the state of Georgia, and local municipalities to ensure safety on set.
