The Story
Danny Witwer is a man of great passion for the armored mixed-martial arts combat sport, Buhurt. Danny's relentless chase for success leaves him with no care for his own physical health. Buhurt makes him feel powerful and competent. It gives him the rush of masculine energy he needs to feel like a man. Despite making it to the final round of a 1v1 championship Buhurt tournament, the injuries he receives in the qualifying fight and his refusal to pull out of the competition lead to a rift between him and his wife Rachel.
As supportive as she is, Rachel begins to realize Danny may be taking his passion for this niche competitive sphere too far. She is concerned Danny is putting Buhurt not only over his own self but also his role as present father and husband.
Expected Release: Summer 2024

Buhurt is a modern-day sport that began in Eastern Europe and has rapidly been rising in popularity in the United States over the past decade. The core of Buhurt is its' strict use of historically accurate armor, weapons and fighting techniques. Everything you see is BLUNT and REAL. The combat is gritty, violent, and brutal. Whether it is 1v1, 3v3, or 150v150: the goal is the utter physical defeat of your opponents. The visual eye candy this competition provides leaves you with limited words to describe what your witnessing until all you have left to say is... CINEMATIC.
.
.
.
The story will undergo a tonal shift as we experience Buhurt for the first time from an outsider's perspective. Brutal and violent. Very much taking on the look of a war sequence. Little motion blur, grey scale colors and lots of violence. This tone carries over into following scenes until Rachel begins to realize what Buhurt is for Danny. It's not sad men or women kicking the crap out of each other. It gives him a sense of purpose. Our grey scaled look will slowly introduce a hint of sunset tone as their daughter Lily comes into play. In the finale we will see a hopeful light take over the dark as our couple further understand each other.
BUHURT will be one of the most unique and unorthodox films you could watch. Combining the family drama of "A Marriage Story" with the medieval swords and sandals action of Ridley Scotts "The Last Duel" forms a brew of imagery you likely have never experienced before.

DAVIS SHAW is the mind behind Buhurt. Davis is a freelance cinematographer, the founder of Shawk 'N Awe Productions LLC, a Masters in Film student at the University of Georgia and a newly married man himself. Davis fell in love with film at 8-years-old when he watched Peter Jacksons "The Lord of the Rings" films for the first time. Since then, his fascination with the fantasy, sci-fi and historical war epics has grown ever more. Davis started his film career with the award-winning sci-fi horror short films "Digital Hindrance" and "Aliens Are Not Real". Long has he waited to tell a story highlighting young marriage and its ability to prevail over any adversity. That combined with his love for medieval action is what brings us here today.
Aliens Are Not Real | Sci-fi Horror Comedy and Digital Hinderance | Sci-fi Horror Comedy both Written and Directed by Davis Shaw
DIRECTORS STATEMENT
I have always had a character theme trapped in my head. A man who holds the values, traditions and motivations from an era long past. A knight in the modern age. An outcast with a fiery spirit that inspires and impacts everyone he touches.
I am a young, married man. Marriage, especially young marriage, is often the butt of a lot of jokes these days. Typically, romance films offer a "good ending" to be an escape from a marriage to enter a "more fun" dating relationship. I want to depict the strength of marriage and its constitution through adversity while being honest about the trials and tribulations that are bound to occur.
Discovering Buhurt was like I stumbled upon a rock. I pulled up that rock and found this hidden society of passionate athletes who have dedicated their money and lives to a niche competitive sphere. The perfect visual symbolism for my character theme was impossible to ignore. Your average Buhurt combatant is the physical embodiment of my character theme.

We are honored to have American Buhurt as an official sponsor for our film. Established in late 2020, American Buhurt started with the intent to build high-quality, US-made buhurt equipment. The brand has grown alongside the community since that time, now specializing in premium-tier, custom-spec swords, axes, and other equipment. Its owner-operator Matthew Aaron is deeply involved in the sport, and currently co-owns and operates the Armored Academy of Arizona, co-captaining the Phoenix Blood Eagles from the same location in the Phoenix metropolitan area. He has also been featured on History Channel's hit series "Forged in Fire," attributing his pickup by the show's producers to his involvement in the stateside steel fighting community.
