This is a story about the intricacies of sleepwalking disorders. It explores the life of Magnolia; a girl who is grieving the loss of her mother while coming to terms with her childhood trauma of being bullied. Ultimately the stress of all this manifests itself through her sleepwalking disorder.

Mission Statement

I am a queer female artist telling stories surrounding complex female leads & creating art that gives women and people of marginalised genders a diverse and powerful voice. Mental health is not one size fits all and should be represented on screen in unique, honest, open minded and beautiful ways.

The Story

AT A GLANCE

As the writer and creator, it is important to me that all heads of department be either women / marginalized genders or BIPOC lead, as this is a drama / thriller which requires a distinctly female / underrepresented voice. Our lead producer, director, and writer are all female.

Check out the TEAM pages to see our female lead diverse cast and crew!

WE SHOOT SEPTEMBER 2021!

THE STORY

BURY A DREAM is a short film that takes place in a 24 hour time period.

WHATS GOING ON? On the morning of her 18th birthday, MAGNOLIA , an ostracized teen, struggling with a sleepwalking disorder, begins going through her mother’s belongings— after her mother was killed in an airplane crash Magnolia has been left to her own devices. Later that day, she is visited by her next door neighbor and love of her life HUNTER and his best friend, who disapproves of Magnolia’s social status, FITZ. Through a delicate dance of dreams v.s reality, Magnolia finds herself at a breaking point and decides to finally take a stand on how these boys have made her feel her entire life just down the road.

As the day progresses reality and fiction blur, entangled in a perilous state of grief following the loss of her mother, Magnolia begins to realize that her mental state is nothing short of a nightmare.

This story is about greif & childhood trauma.

PERSONALS

As a queer female artist I love stories surrounding complex female leads, LGBTQIA+ characters, and genres such as thrillers, drama, and exprimental pieces. Most of my film making experience has been as an actor and after moving to LA during the pandemic I decided it was my time to expand my body of work. So after listening to My Favoirte Murder (podcast) in the car like I always do, I heard a compelling story about a man who murdered his wife in his sleep. I was immedaitley facinated. After watching an episode of 2020 on the suspect, it was clear to me that this person was not as clear cut guilty as the court made him seem. There should be deeper research and studies on this horrific matter to prevent people going to prison for mental health phenomena they have no coltrol over.

It's important to me to have a diverse cast and crew to tell this story as REM sleep disorders hold no bound to who they effect. It can happen to anyone. Art about mental health matters becuase it is important for everyone to feel that they can see themselves on screen. We are aiming to tell the raw and real emotional story of a life effected by an uncontrolable sleepwalking disorders.

NOTE: This is not a horror movie. I suffered from sleep paralysis for years and all I could find were movies about people being possessed and having sleep paralysis as a result. Sleep disorders are not paranormal and should be treated with as much T.L.C as any other mental health issue would be.

This surreal nightmare explores the following question: Are sleepwalking murderers innocent?

VISUALS

BURY A DREAM is a raw, hard-hitting psychological drama that trances viewer into a dream state of nightmares.

Set in a quaint oceanside home, we imagine the film to be visually dreamy and bright, with bold colors, and a cast of diverse and honest characters. For the telling of a dark tale is easy to do around the dark hue of a fire, but we aim to take it into the light. The ancient origins of story. A major mix of Leda and the Swan, Swan Lake and of course the classic tale of the Ugly Duckling. The Following our heroine through the grief of a lost mother and strive for a lost lover, we see the sleepwalking begins to take over from night into day through an eery lens. One that offers no easy answers. Intense. Dreamy. Soft. Raw.

Our visual language will echo films such as MIDSOMMAR, A GHOST STORY, SOMETIMES I THINK ABOUT DYING and ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND. The dark and twinkling corners of Magnolias sleep state contrasts jarringly with the light and wispy life of a port side town. We envision a soundscape that feels like both a fairytale and an electric shock.

WHY TODAY?

The conversation on mental health is ever on going and now, more important than ever. We must always strive to understand one another on a level that goes deeper than #selfcare.

WHY HELP?

With the impact of the deadly Coronavirus, it's no secret that this is a challenging time for creatives. Especially for those on the ground floor, forging a path of their own. Your contribution will go toward supporting these artists. On a practical level, it could mean pay, food, and rent for a professional otherwise out of work. This pandemic threw a wrench in production plans all across the globe. But we are committed to telling this story- with the right strategies, testing, and COVID-safe protocols in place. We hold the safety of our cast and crew as the highest priority.

There are a lot of causes to which you can give your hard earned money. But we believe that one of them, is creation. At a time like this, stories are what bind us. Your pledge of support would mean bringing this important story to life.
