Mission Statement

Following the largest catastrophe for U.S. public education since Dred Scott, the culture has yet to meaningfully reflect on what went wrong and how to move forward. Class Wars tells the origin story of the end of public education while it crumbles in an ode to activist filmmaking.

The Story

Class Wars follows Mr. E on a propulsive journey through the web of chaos smothering classrooms in the wake of the pandemic. After years of research into the roots of social issues impacting health & learning, teacher-turned-director Joseph Erikson assembled a crew for a series of interviews with high school students and teachers in the Seattle area.

After showing the footage to Hollywood friends, Erikson crafted a structure for a movie synthesizing critical media & education frameworks learned from his dual master's in film & teaching. The race to get the story was on, and Erikson moved fast to produce over two dozen high quality interviews spanning two continents, using his classroom acumen to naturally become his own producer.

Back in Portland, Erikson collaborated with acclaimed animator Paul Culp, whose approach to motion graphics and design nurtured the vision Erikson had been looking for, and the film's aesthetic and tone had become clear on film after two years of work.

We need to go back to Oklahoma, where the state's ambitious young Superintendent Ryan Walters and his crew have demolished the separation of church & state. We have strong leads and have started building community across nations. In a historical crisis, a project as ambitious as Class Wars is preciently urgent.

Once we meet our initial fundraising goal with sufficient gusto, we'll expand to stretch goals for the post-production process - hiring the professional engineers of filmmaking to take the story to the screen.

This has been an independently financed project with a lot of production, and it is time for us to invite you along as partners in community to get Class Wars made. We love the Seed & Spark community and their workers, and hope you'll join us on this transformative campaign!
