The Story
Blanca leaves home because her mental state cannot bear the weight of what she has witnessed her mom become. So, she runs to her quickest escape route in the embrace of her boyfriend, or her "prince," Nathan. When Nathan, a drug dealer, tells her he's running short and needs to pay immediate rent, he coerces her into making an explicit clip together. Blanca grapples her compulsion with god/religion and her values at her original home, while also combating the betrayal from her mother and newfound pain from Nathan, who she thought she'd live happily ever after with.
Como La Nieve challenges the image of a Chicana woman; with Blanca's doll-like style and music taste, she is undoubtedly still a part of her culture. Her tale is also tragically real, and we know any woman who sees Como La Nieve will find some relation in her story of love, pressure, and pain.
Set during the late 90s/2000s, we have many visual/musical inspirations that we would like to recreate to establish compelling, contemporary tones and themes we know many can resonate with. Additionally, we want to juxtapose the raw realism of Blancas situation, both with her boyfriend and her alcoholic mother, with whimsical flashbacks paired with dramatic lighting and a feeling of being on stage with her mom, showing a version of her mother that is tenderhearted, gentle, and overall benign.
Think The Florida Project, Moonlight, and Buffalo 66.

Hello everyone! I am so excited to make this film and work with my writer, Heidi Espinoza, to make this film come to fruition. I grew up with two amazing parents, but I would like to highlight the relationship I had/have with my mother. She and my dad were my first supporters, with my mom reflecting on our home videos of her calling me a "movie star" during my adolescence before she even knew my passion for film. However, she is my first and greatest critic; she was the first to interrogate me, implant hesitation in pursuing a creative endeavor, and tell me all the horror stories of Hollywood.
Knowing her, I know this tactic is rooted in the generational trauma of immigrant families. She grew up in an environment where her push to success was pressured, all without guidelines in a new world. She wanted nothing but for me to be prepared for all the hardships I would face, even if the methods were harsh sometimes. This isn't just about my mom, so many Latina women can understand this struggle.
It's crazy, but I was always dubbed a little "Snow White" growing up, with my dark hair and extremely fair skin. I was also born on December 21st, the winter solstice, during the 64th anniversary of Disney's Snow White. So it's safe to say that I begged Heidi to let me direct this film and harbor both of our visions, especially knowing that this film, while intimate to us, is beyond the lives of the writer and me.
My experience ranges from an internship at the Cannes Film Festival to working as a PA on high-budget features, to fulfilling nearly every role on many independent, alumni, and thesis projects. With Como la Nieve, I have a chance to showcase what I know can be done for this film's look and tone, and I know that if we make or exceed this budget with your contributions, this film will be everything I envision and more.
Our team truly believes in Blanca's story and is excited for this film to be made and for audiences to watch Blanca's story unfold with their own eyes. Thankfully as students, we are doing our best with our resources and network.
Nonetheless, we would love to raise $3500 (or more!)
This amount is to pay for location/permit fees, equipment rentals/insurance, a good foundation for the production design budget, food, gas reimbursements, and/or stipends to keep our crew happy and well, and of course, the means to distribute and take this to festivals! Our stretch goal would be to possibly give our crew some pay + assure any unexpected fees are covered and we will not have to go out of pocket.
We have a comprehensive chart right below for you guys here (& "Wishlist" tab for more information):

Location and Permit Fees
Costs $1,700
While we have the resources for nearly all our scenes, we want to secure a motel and church location that we can get within this budget!
Equipment Insurance
Costs $600
We need insurance/equipment fee coverage for the options of a Black Magic/ARRI camera we have eyes on. Same goes for lenses and light kit!
Production Design
Costs $250
We have most of our props and costumes! This budget is to ensure everything that may need duplicates or replacements is covered.
Food & Gas Reimbursements
Costs $800
We would love to accommodate our crew's dietary restrictions as best we can so giving them great food and gas money is the least we can do!

It would be great if we can take this to festivals so everyone that put their time into this film gets their well-deserved recognition!

Hello! My name is Emily Cortes and I will be the Director of Como La Nieve. I have extensive experience working as an intern at the Cannes Film Festival, working on Netflix features, event videographer, and in nearly every role on independent and student sets across many universities like AFI, LMU, Alumni from other states, etc! I have also worked with my minimal resources as a student over the years, creating experimental and narrative films while also flexing my editing muscle in cutting my work and making fun montages to document memories precious to me. I am originally from Miami, FL, and in coming to Los Angeles I have built a life from the ground up and made amazing connections with so many like-minded creatives. From the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU for taking a look at our campaign and taking the time to give any donations you can to this queer, Latina woman-led production.
