Get Loved is a comedic ode to our universal quest to be seen and heard, told through a satirical marketing campaign for yogurt. This film pokes fun at how capitalism exploits human emotion for profit yet leaves little space for the human behind it.

Mission Statement

My mission is to shine a mirror on the world until we love our own reflection, and to make space for and learn from all voices, especially queer, POC, Asian diaspora, and marginalized. *Get Loved is an inclusive production and features talent & crew from unique & underrepresented backgrounds.*

The Story

GET LOVED is a short comedic film written & directed by standup comic Teresa Lee. The story was inspired by Teresa's experience going through intense group therapy. Though it was incredibly effective in getting her through some dark personal times, she couldn't help but cringe at her own deep desire to be seen and heard.

Out of that self-judgment was born the image of a woman getting overly personal in the most impersonal of places: a corporate marketing focus group. Of course, Teresa was eventually able to get vulnerable in earnest, but the loneliness of wanting to connect to others in a world that prioritizes your spending power over your humanity is something she felt compelled to explore.  Thus, Get Loved was born.

THE STORY

The film starts with a woman on a balcony prepping for a romantic date night with accompanying voiceover. At first, we think it could be her inner monologue.

However, we realize this is just a commercial for a yogurt brand, and we find out the voice is actually GRAY, reading off a piece of a paper in a conference room full of other women.

The women have been asked to participate in a marketing focus group to share their thoughts on the campaign. Gray's overshare is awkward, but the group moves on, and she sinks back into her chair as the others start to vibe and connect over their thoughts on the ad.

When the session ends, Gray asks if she can keep the notes she wrote, but the company won't let her.

However, she does get an extra swag bag full of free yogurt. At first it seems that Gray fails to be seen or heard by anybody in her world, but as she drives off with nothing but yogurt in her car, the audience becomes the passenger accompanying her in the car. Her loneliness becomes ours, and through her silly breakdown, the audience shares a collective catharsis.

The short ends with a hard cut to the NEW commercial the executives create after the focus group. It's fun, fresh, exciting, young, and absolutely uses nothing from Gray's personal share. Ah, the joy of advertising.

PRODUCTION SCHEDULE

Most of the film has already been shot (thank you 0% APR Credit Card and Teresa's good credit score) so we thankfully have safely avoided the risks of filming in the Delta Variant rise. However, the festival deadlines are fast approaching with the first one in late September, and the team is focused on completing post-production in a safe-remote-flexible way through September and October, and building the marketing campaign out in time for premiere in the Spring of 2022.
