Story
Mission Statement
Goldie's explores the story of a young man who seeks closure after years of confusion surrounding a loss. Our film examines themes of the broken family, addiction, compulsive behavior, and family secrets.About The Project
The Idea
Goldie's is a short film based on Charlie Cutter, a twenty-year-old college student whose life has become consumed by a recurring nightmare of a gas station robbery. As the young man stuggles to navigate his life, he finds himself on a journey with the help of friends to uncover the truth.
In 2020, Quinnipiac student Richie Tobin wrote a script titled "Enter Nightmare". This story was later adapted into what is now "Goldie's" but the premise remains the same. An important aspect to our film is creating a dreamlike, ethereal world as Charlie's main objective is to get to the bottom of what's causing his nightmares. After meeting a young spiritual woman, she introduces him to lucid dreaming; this becomes Charlie's main form of investigating his own recurring nightmare.
Inspirations
We are inspired by films that capture a dark, ominous tone while illustrating vibrant visuals through the use of cinematography, set design, audio and editing. Goldie's has influences of "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" and "Drive".
Charlie's dream sequences will visually be inspired by "Nightcrawler" and "Bladerunner 2049". Using fluorescent, vivid lighting will immerse audiences in Charlie's world while transporting us back to the 1980s.
Throughout the film, Charlie alternates between reality and his dreams. The scenes that take place in the "present", or early 2000s, will be inspired by "Se7en" taking influence from the darker, more neutral color scheme.
Tone & Vision
Our goal is to create the world how Charlie sees it. Considering his nightmares have begun affecting his everyday life, Charlie finds himself in a limbo of angst now that the distinction between reality and fantasy is blurred. Charlie sees life as a nightmare, mainly depicted through dark, dreary themes.
It's when Charlie dreams that his world comes to light in ethereal, neon vibrant color. In order to create an immersive experience, here is our plan in achieving this:
-
Cinematography- The use of color and lighting plays a huge factor in distinguishing between Charlie's nightmares and reality. Dutch angles and camera movements are key in creating an uncomfortableness for audiences.
Realism vs. Fantasy- Half of this film takes place as Charlie is in a dream-like world. We want to portray these scenes in stark contrast to the other nightmare that is his life.
Editing- Shots range from long takes to quick clips depending on the rhythm of each scene. Quick cuts will be used to emphasize chaoticness while slow, long takes build up the intensity of this slow-burn film.
Acting- In order to properly do the story of Goldie's justice, we want to hire professional actors as we plan for extensive rehearsal time. It's important for our script's emotion to be captured on screen.
Set Design- Goldie's takes place during two time periods; the early 2000's and 1980s. The use of props and wardrobe that corresponds to these eras will transport audiences back in time.
How we will use the money
Starting off, part of our budget is dedicated to safety. In alignment with CDC regulations, all cast and crew will be tested for Covid-19 and maintain social distancing on set. Part of these expenses includes masks, tests, and cleaning supplies.
The largest portion of our budget is dedicated to production costs. To create Goldie's, we need four different locations, transportation, equipment, lodging for our crew, and a multitude of other things like props and wardrobe. The money raised will be used to pay our actors for their time and behind-the-scenes necessities like food and travel.
Post-production costs like sound mixing and festival fees comprise what's left of our budget. When Goldie's has been shot, we want to add the finishing touches that make it professional. Furthermore, once it is complete, we want to submit our work to festivals throughout the country.
