Mission Statement
Diversity in thoughts, beliefs, cultures, backgrounds and perspectives creates a richer experience. The creators/producers of H-Town are African American and Japanese, male and female, and differ socio-economically. Diversity/inclusion is the foundation of this project & will be visible on screen.About The Project
Think “Paid In Full” meets “Thelma and Louise” in urban Houston, TX and they find love along the way. You haven’t seen “Paid In Full?” Well, think “Set It Off” meets “The Wire” meets “Pretty Woman” set in the 5thWard of Houston, TX. By now you get the idea. I’m describing a project that has everything; drama, suspense, action/violence, redemption, romance, and it’s funny. That is everything we felt and read in Houston based Amazon urban romance best-selling author, Nicole Jackson’s first book “She Got It” and continued to experience in her other works. The icing on the cake is that these books center around young black females that even with the odds stacked against them, use sheer determination, survival instincts, and by any means necessary attitudes to rise to the top. That sounds like the idea of the “American Dream” summed up to us and we immediately knew that these books needed to be brought to life.
After finding Nicole on Facebook, courting her, and visiting some of Houston’s most notorious neighborhoods featured in the novels (i.e. 5th Ward, Sunnyside, 3rd Ward, Kasmere Gardens and Studewood) we were able to get a glimpse of the richness and complexities of these communities. The question remained; why hadn’t we seen this world depicted on television? Two and a half years later, we have “H-Town,” an episodic series that is as much about urban Houston as it is about the characters that thrive and sometimes want to escape it.
As we are seeing more diverse images of “blackness” in tv and film it’s important to keep the momentum going by exploring more parts unknown. Season one is based on Nicole’s first book “She Got It” and is for anyone who understands the dopeness of female friendship, secretly enjoys reality tv, moved by the grittiness of the underworld, intrigued by watching someone make something out of nothing, and those excited by a little romance.
After working on all seven seasons of HBO’s hit series “True Blood”, I’ve learned some valuable lessons - two of which are, to always listen to your gut and story is everything. My gut is telling me now is the time to bring this project to life. My experience working in television combined with Yoshinobu’s work producing commercials and indie films, along with Derrick’s expertise in shaping and working with young actors confirms this. Nicole’s storytelling is the epitome of what’s current, real, and engaging.Incentives
