Mission Statement

We invite the audience to participate in the dialogue of childrens’ mental health as neglectful childhood experiences are increasing. This film aims to shed light on topics of trauma and resilience, especially within the Black community, emphasizing how essential educators can be in a child's life.

The Story

Growing up in a tumultuous home, Josiah finds his voice with the help of a dedicated educator, freeing himself from toxic family cycles.

Josiah (Child) - Main Character

Josiah (Adult)- Main Character

Noah (Child)- Josiah's Son

James- Josiah's Dad

Diana- Josiah's Mom

Amira- Josiah's Sister

Mr. Soloman- Teacher

The aim is to create a visual language that reflects Josiah's feelings of isolation and solitude, while also conveying the suffocating nature of his home life. All of the visual, stylistic choices have been made with the intent of having the audience experience his world through his perspective.

By using wide, cinematic shots, the audience will visually immerse themselves into Josiah’s world alongside him. The nature of the visual scene can be conveyed through the use of nostalgic warm tones, and indicative low- contrast shots.

With Houston’s rich cultural landscape as a core visual inspiration, we hope to promote the landscape of the city as a dynamic destination to create culturally diverse stories by native Houstonians.

With long tense cuts, expansive sound design, and aesthetic color grading, the viewer will become submerged into the emotions of the story. Throughout the film, the camera movement will be fluid and deliberate, drawing from the characters' raw distress.

Growing up, I watch my father verbally, mentally, and emotionally abuse my mother. I witnessed a lot of heated arguments, which caused our home to be very tense and intolerable. As a result, I became a shy and introverted kid, who struggled to assert himself. God may allow us to go through so much but for a higher purpose.

At the time of writing, I worked as a photography instructor for young students at an elementary school. One of my students, who was remarkably silent, caught my attention. He never responded despite my best efforts to initiate a conversation with him. Nevertheless, I observed that he was an excellent student and always finished his assignments on schedule. I couldn’t help but wonder why he was so reserved. After some inquiry, I discovered that his mother had recently passed away, and he was still mourning her loss. This realization made me ponder how life-altering events impact a child’s behavior. As an educator, this experience reminded me of the significance of being empathetic and compassionate towards all my students, irrespective of their conduct or temperament. It also reinforced my belief that every child has a unique story, and “He’s So Quiet” allows me to narrate mine.

This piece of work is a remarkable portrayal of the inner thoughts and emotions of a quiet and introverted child. The main goal of this project is to offer a voice and platform to those children who are frequently disregarded, undervalued, or feel unheard in our society. By diving into a child’s mind’s intricate and often perplexing world, this project sheds light on the critical importance of early experiences in shaping a child’s mental health and overall well-being. The film highlights how these experiences, especially the negative ones, can leave a profound and lasting impact on a child’s psyche, leading to long-term mental health problems.
