Mission Statement
The man - "him" - doesn't appear in this story, and the viewer never learns his name. By removing him from the equation, we are unabashedly declaring that yes, there are multiple sides to every story - but the side we are interested in is that of the women.About The Project
Over the course of one night, the final 5 contestants on a reality dating show are confused and humiliated after stumbling upon some upsetting truths about the intentions of their suitor--a man never seen or heard from in the film and referred to only as “him”. On a show where women are traditionally pitted against each other, they must suddenly come together to assert their self-worth and integrity against both their suitor and the show's producers who manipulated them into falling in love.
Jenna: A marine biology grad student at Stanford and former competitive swimmer. She’s very insecure about her dating history and is more likely to be in love just for the sake of being in love rather than be with the right person.
Shana: A lingerie boutique owner from Las Vegas and former burlesque dancer. She’s loud, dynamic, and has no filter. The kind of reality villain you love to hate. She’ll say she’s intermittent fasting and doing Soul Cycle, but will end up eating a whole pizza for dinner.
Savannah: A kindergarten teacher from Williamsburg, Virginia. She’s a “space cadet” for lack of a better word. She’s a little odd and playful in a dry way. The epitome of “no worries if not!” Wonders if men never see her as an option because she comes off naive.
Claire: A literary agent from South Carolina. Probably the most perfect contestant for a typical guy on a reality show. Gorgeous, sweet, unproblematic, wholesome, ready for marriage, wants a lot of kids - she is “wifey”. But she’s smarter than people assume she is.
Adrienne: An unemployed college dropout from Boston and the youngest of the group. She’s a total genius, and tough as nails. She takes no BS and is quick to call people out. She went to MIT for undergrad but got expelled during her senior year for cheating on a test. She’s a piece of work, but has everyone’s best interests at heart.
Greg: The suitor’s producer on the show. He’s a “good guy,” or is he? Funny, a bit of a romantic, but is guarded and cautious. His job is extremely important to him, and he knows how to work people to get what he wants.
Sarah: A field producer on the show. Gaslight, gatekeep, girlboss! Super nice to your face but will talk behind your back once you’re out of the room.
Xav: The voice of the head producer who is cunning, eager to get the best soundbites, and cause the most chaos. A real POS!
Sedona, Arizona is the centerpiece for our film. It's the perfect location for a reality dating show where contestants are secluded during the day, traveling to new environments week after week. Contestants have no distractions - no access to phones or internet, no family contact, not even books - so the mind has little else to focus on besides falling in love with a stranger.
The film takes place almost entirely in the villa where the contestants are staying. This simplifies our filming schedule and allows us to creative an intentionally efficient and controlled filming process. We have secured this location in Sedona's high-end golf community Seven Canyons.
Of the top 100 grossing films of 2019, women accounted for 12% of directors and 20% of writers. Those are some…bleak numbers. We are passionate about changing these statistics, and bringing more women, and their stories to the screen. Your contributions will support a female led production, featuring a 75% female cast.
Working as a union production gives us access to very experienced performers, and maintaining a professional set is imperative to us. Our cast and crew will be following union rules regarding work and payment, and your pledge will allow us to follow these requirements to the letter.
The pandemic has also made filming more complicated. In order to ensure a safe working environment, SAG requires a Covid Compliance Supervisor, as well as other safety protocols. We will use funds raised to purchase masks, covid tests, and sanitizer to follow industry Health & Safety requirements.
Our shoot begins in mid-January in Sedona, Arizona. Right now, we are finishing up casting, assembling the rest of the team, and planning all of the logistics.
Tess and Rebecca are currently on opposite coasts, but we're hard at work!
After the shoot, we will move into post production, which includes things like editing, color correction, and working with a composer. Then we will be able to submit our film to festivals to find a wider audience and a distributor who can take this film to the next level.
Making a pledge helps us create the best possible working environment for our team, and 100% of your pledge will go towards production costs.
If you can’t make a monetary pledge but would like to help in another way, such as contributing resources or services, we are happy to talk about that as well!

About This Team
Tess and Rebecca met in a classroom at George Mason University in 2016. Tess was auditioning for Rebecca’s Capital Fringe Festival production, and ultimately snagged the lead role. Ever since, they’ve been collaborating together, and the “fam” was born.
Him’s own origin story is uniquely Tess-and-Rebecca. This project started out way back in 2019 as a play! As you may know, we both bring theatre as a foundation of our artistic practices.
And in early summer of 2019, when Tess had the opportunity to have her then-play Him professionally read at a theatre in Northern VA, Rebecca was the first one she called. We had a fast-and-furious process and after only 10 hours of rehearsal, we presented the play in front of an audience for the first time.
In 2021, Rebecca reached out to Tess with the text that changed it all: “Do you think Him is necessarily a play? Or could it be a movie?”
For the past year and a half we’ve been making this thought a reality. Many core elements of the original play Tess wrote are still a part of our film, but as soon as we started working on Him (Screenplay Version), it became clear that film is the medium this story was meant to exist in. On screen, we can visually and intimately investigate the psyches of each of the women in the story. We have also felt free to expand certain surreal aspects of the narrative, knowing how exciting they will be on camera.
Rounding out the team is Kevin Galloway as DP, who has worked with Rebecca before during her time at Carnegie Mellon.Tess Higgins (writer/Shana) is an LA based actor and writer who got her start in Washington DC. Tess is an experienced theatre artist and improviser, appearing in productions at Rorschach Theatre, Imagination Stage, Constellation Theatre Company, Theater Alliance, and Washington Improv Theatre to name a few. She has worked on numerous indie shorts and features, including 2021's Kringle Time. She also considers herself a Bachelor Nation Scholar.
Rebecca Wahls (director/writer) is pursuing her MFA in Directing as a John Wells Fellow at Carnegie Mellon University. With a strong background in theatre and new media, she first brought her artistic rigor and strong sense of story to the world of film with two shorts, "#cottagecore" and "Last," both of which she wrote and directed.
Kevin Galloway (Director of Photography) is a Pittsburgh based cinematographer with roots in Philadelphia, PA. His love of philosophy and realism contributes to his process of creating imagery and selecting projects. When he is not actively working as a cinematographer, he is a camera assistant and member of the International Cinematographer’s Guild Local 600. Some of the major motion pictures and TV shows he has worked on recently include, “Sweet Girl” (2021), “Archive 81” (2022), and “Sprung” (2022). -
