Mission Statement
As a queer and Latinx led film group, we are passionate about marginalized stories and more so stories of hope. Hummingbirds explores the nuance of queerness and Latinidad, and we are deeply invested in pushing this film out as it talks about suicide prevention through the lens of love.About The Project
"Is our love real even when no one is around to celebrate it?"
This is a question Toñito ponders on and evidently sends him down a spiral of existential-crisis ridden thoughts. His boyfriend, Carlito, always finds a way to ground him and bring him back from the edge but this time it's different. They're both triggered, they're both suffering. One is just louder than the other.Hummingbirds tells the story of this couple's existential fears of the future colliding with each other as they try to reconcile their respective places in their families. Toñito receives a text from his mother inviting him to his estranged older brother's wedding triggering a downfall of trauma-ridden thoughts. Hyperfixated on mourning what he'll never have with his family, Toñito becomes blind to the love he already has in his life. Playing witness to this ongoing carousel of suicidal ideation and grief, Carlito finds his stamina waning and asking himself the same questions Toñito's been posing. The two are confronted with their opposing views on the matter and are tasked to find a way through it together or apart.
Suicide prevention is a topic near and dear to our hearts. Suicide is the second leading cause of death among young people aged 10 to 24 (Hedegaard, Curtin, & Warner, 2018) — and lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning (LGBTQ) youth are at significantly increased risk. LGBTQ youth are not inherently prone to suicide risk because of their sexual orientation or gender identity but rather placed at higher risk because of how they are mistreated and stigmatized in society. In creating films that represent queer Latinx characters living with suicidal ideation and managing it with their community, we create authentic reflections of the everyday and take away the stigma around mental health issues embedded in our cultures. That's the value in what we've made and the value of your contribution. Creating media that represents and normalizes afflictions that are universal to us all allows for more healing and growth to take place.
In the past, our director has worked on projects such as LYT, a documentary aimed at destigmatizing the conversation around mental health issues in BIPOC communities. The project itself served as a healing space for all individuals that participated and the audiences that viewed it. Moreover, our projects have gone on to screen in multiple venues, film festivals, allowing for people to see our message and internalize it.The best part is that we’ve filmed the project in its entirety and solely need help with crossing the finish line in completing the film. The project was funded primarily from In-Kind Contributions from the team and our peers as well as self-investment funds from our director. We all truly believe we’re doing something special with this story and have spent the last 10 months working to make this possible.
As a film group, we’re building something bigger and we are always thinking about impact. It’s true what they say when they say “representation matters”. Not only that, but valuing that representation both on-screen and off-screen goes a long way. To truly create the impact we seek we need to take care of each other and the rest of the team that’s working on completing this project.
Our last bit of funding to raise is $8,500. Here’s a breakdown:
12% - Film Festival Submissions
36% - Cast and Key Crew
52% - ADR & Post-Sound Work
Hitting these numbers will allow us to compensate the cast and crew for their contributions to this project. In addition it will help us to reimburse our Intimacy Director for helping us create the safety we needed on-set to execute this project well. With this final funding we’ll also be able to polish the film and distribute it into a wider net than previously possible.
The journey of creative development to production was an enriching and incredible one and we’d love to be able to show the world what we’ve created. This campaign, but most of all, YOU, will help us finish our post-production phase and get this film about love and hope out into the world. In the event that we're able to raise 100% of our campaign funds, we'll distribute the extra funds accordingly:
- Film Festival Submissions
- Online Platform Submissions
- In-Person Screening Events in support of The Trevor ProjectOther Ways You Can Help:
