Hutterite
A scripted short film by Rebecca Flinn
Inspired by her mother’s own escape from a Hutterite commune
"Now more than ever we need films that are told from the female gaze."
Hutterite is a rare peek behind the curtain of an Anabaptist commune in the 1960’s & 1970’s. This painful and challenging story is told through the eyes of Marigold, a tenacious young Hutterite woman with the impossible dream of getting an education. The film explores Marigold’s oppression and heartache being trapped in a Patriarchal system, her brother’s budding and controversial sexuality, and the bourgeoning wave of feminism that was calling her into the outside world.
Hutterite is an uplifting story of a woman who overcomes great odds. The themes of the film are a mirror to held up to society in a time where funding for education is being cut and access to important resources for women are being taken away. Even though this story takes place in a Hutterite Colony in the 1960’s & 1970’s the story has echoes to the current political landscape, and a second resurgence of the rise of feminism. Since I grew up around this culture I am called to tell this story that has inspired me every day of my life.
