The Story

Have you ever dealt with an in-law that barges in at the wrong time? Imagine no boundaries to stop their intrusions, even if they're dead. Negotiating with the Dead explores this awkward conflict with hilarity and heart when a newlywed couple, Lily and Gunter's sexy time is interrupted by the ghost of Gunter's mother. She's angry, and she’s not going away until he makes good on his deathbed promise.

The Mission

Our film uses humor and heart to explore the need for compromise and compassion when dealing with conflict. With this film, we hope to create joy through laughter. With a diverse cast and crew of all backgrounds, genders, and ages, we will make a compelling, comedic film that anyone and everyone can relate to. We all have families, and heaven, or hell, help us, we can’t live with ‘em, and as Gunter learns, you sure as hell can’t live without ‘em.

Why Negotiating With The Dead? Why now? This film gives us something we all need, especially now, and that's fun. It's also relatable because it's about secrets and broken promises and how we get to a place of forgiveness but explores it in a fun and humorous way.

The Inspiration

"The comic impulse…is about a willingness to dwell in the awkward, shameful places we’d prefer not to dwell. It’s what allows us to face the truth of ourselves.” -- Steve Almond

From this awkward, shameful place, I find many of my stories, including Negotiating With The Dead, which is a humorous take on what it’s like to negotiate the different values, traditions, and opinions of each other’s families when you merge your lives together. I felt like my mother-in-law was the 3rd party in my marriage, and she somehow had a vote on our life decisions.

In our film, Mother is an intrusive ghost that comes between Lily, a diva accustomed to getting her own way, and Gunter, a devoted mama’s boy. Mother was difficult alive but becomes a ghostly terror after she’s dead as she returns to remind Gunter of the deathbed promise he made to her. When Gunter tries to appease both women, it only makes matters worse.

What's Next...

We're currently assembling the team and auditioning actors. We will start filming at the beginning of March and plan to complete post-production by mid to end of April and then submit Negotiating With The Dead to film festivals, including Austin and Sundance Film Festivals. All the money raised will be used to pay for the cast, crew, wardrobe, set design, post-production costs, and film festival fees. Those who donate at the $25 incentive level and above will receive a private link to preview the film when it is completed.
