The Story
After an office party, Scarlett and Roman, a pair of secret lovers, embark on a tense late-night drive, their affair heavy in the air. Distracted by heated conversations about their infidelity, they’re suddenly thrown into a panic when they accidentally hit someone on the dark, isolated road. Unsure of what to do and desperate to keep their affair hidden, they make a rash decision to cover up what they believe is a tragic accident.
Fearing exposure, they take the body into the woods to bury the evidence, but as the night unfolds, the weight of their secrets begins to fracture their already fragile relationship. The emotional tension between them spirals out of control, pushing both to their breaking points.
Amidst the panic and drama, both are so consumed by their personal issues that they fail to notice signs of something far more dangerous unfolding around them. As they become entangled in their personal struggle for control, they unknowingly set the stage for an even deadlier encounter. The true danger, however, isn’t what they’ve done—it’s what they’re too distracted to see.
Why Brody?
A note from our Director: I’m Brody Wellmaker, a storyteller with a knack for weaving dark humor, suspense, and relatable comedy and drama into my work. Like many of us, I’ve fallen victim to the overwhelming weight of interpersonal drama—so consumed by it that I’ve pulled my blinders up, missing out on more critical situations. I plan to use my personal experiences to create an authentic and captivating short film, one that will keep audiences holding their breath from start to finish.
Why This?
Night Drive isn't just a horror film; it's a story about how personal drama can blind us to greater dangers. In a world where we're often so caught up in our own issues, we miss the bigger picture. This film takes that idea and turns it into a thrilling, character-driven journey that highlights how interpersonal conflict can lead to devastating consequences.
Why Now?
Now more than ever, we live in a world full of personal distractions. Night Drive taps into the fear of missing critical moments because we’re too focused on ourselves. This story is timely and urgent, reflecting the anxieties many of us feel about being caught off guard when we least expect it. It’s a film that speaks to our times and our tendency to let personal issues cloud our judgment.
We are at an exciting stage with Night Drive! The script is locked down, locations are being sorted out, and half of our cast is already signed on. But there’s still a lot to do, and this campaign will allow us to dedicate the time and resources needed to bring this project to life. Preproduction is a vital part of filmmaking, and taking time out of our Director of Photography’s, producers’, and crew’s schedules costs money. Your pledge goes toward organizing shoot days, renting equipment, and paying our talented artists for their hard work.
Brody has agreed not to take any cut as director from this campaign, as he’s prioritizing the professionals who have been kind enough to help him on past projects. Every penny of your support goes directly into the development of Night Drive.
Once completed, we plan to deliver the film straight to you! While we’d love to see it make the festival rounds, releasing it publicly may limit our eligibility in certain festivals. But more than anything, we just love creating. We want to craft something exciting for you and prove that with a little help, we can deliver serious, thrilling entertainment.
Throughout preproduction, filming, and post, we’ll be keeping you updated and bringing you along for the entire journey!
For Night Drive we’re drawing inspiration from acclaimed directors like Ari Aster, Jordan Peele, and Darren Aronofsky. From the sense of impending doom in Hereditary, to the realistic dialogue and underlying drama of Get Out, to the intense close-ups and claustrophobia of Requiem for a Dream, we aim to capture the same unsettling atmospheres. Our goal is to honor these brilliant filmmakers while infusing our own unique style and vision into Night Drive, creating a horror experience that is both familiar and refreshingly original.
