Mission Statement
Our writer/director Cassie Lin wanted to provide a new perspective for both U.S. and Asian audiences to look at each other's culture holistically rather than critically, and ultimately to break the barrier by saying love is love no matter who you are and where you are.About The Project
HELP US REACH OUR GOAL OF $4,000
WHAT IS THE FILM ABOUT?
"NOT LIKE YOU" or 不像你 is a short film about two Chinese American women, Mar and Kai, who reconnect several years after their tentative relationship in high school. Mar finds herself falling back in love with Kai and her dream of being a writer, but has to confront the conservatism of her Asian American community and parents.
Mar (24) works at a Chinese grocery store and is a recent college grad. She has a degree in finance, but has a passion for writing. Her only real comfort is a pet turtle named Fuzzy. Kai (26) is a dance studio teacher in Cambridge. A majority of the film takes place in Boston's Chinatown. The story is written in a bilingual dialogue of Mandarin and English, with an all-Asian cast and diverse crew.
BOSTON'S CHINATOWN
A note about Chinatown from our director:
The middle-ground sandwiched between two cultures, which gives the story an ambiguous vibe that reflects the struggle the characters are facing about their identities. Also, in a sense, Chinatown is more “traditional China” than China itself. The traditional Chinese values have been maintained there in a very unique way.

Risks and challenges
INT. BEDROOM - EVENING
Y/N scrolls through the Not Like You fundraiser, wondering if there are any risks or challenges to the film that they really want to back. They read through the following Q&A as if it was q'd from their perspective, and a'd by the creators of Not Like You, who would really appreciate Y/N's help in making a great film.HOW WILL MY DONATION BE USED?
A bulk of our funds will be dedicated to providing food for our cast and crew and to gathering production design materials which accurately represent the Chinese American experience. Other needs include securing our locations, appropriately compensating our team, and transportation/equipment rentals.
WHAT IF YOU DON'T REACH YOUR GOAL?
The film will still be made! It is the senior thesis project for Cassie, our lovely director, and while we have some cash to get started, it won't be enough to ensure that the film is filled with the aesthetic (and literal) flavor of Chinese culture that is so ingrained in the lives of Not Like You's characters.
HOW WILL COVID AFFECT PRODUCTION?
Everyone on the cast and crew will be fully vaccinated by the time we shoot in early September. We are working with vendors, craft services, and our location owners to make sure sanitization and safety is the priority.
WILL THIS FILM ACTUALLY COME OUT?
Yes! Post production (the editing process) will start immediately after filming, with a guarantee that all those interested can watch this by the end of 2021.
IF I DONATED TO A REWARDS TIER, WHEN WILL I RECEIVE THESE ITEMS?
Coral, our executive producer and fundraising extraordinaire will be working extensively with marketing guru Khanh after the fundraiser ends to make sure all items are produced in a timely manner that can be delivered to backers around the range of the film's release.
HOW CAN I KEEP IN TOUCH PRIOR TO THE FILM'S RELEASE?
You can follow our regularly updated Instagram (also run by Khanh) here: https://www.instagram.com/notlikeyou.bfa/
The other executive producer Jacqueline will be sending updates to backers during every major phase of production to keep you in the loop.
