The Story
Proud Marys: The Birth of a New Musical is more than just a "making-of" movie -- it's a front-row seat to a cultural revolution.

By supporting our campaign, you’re backing a story about the audacity to be seen. You will witness an intimate, high-stakes chronicle of how creators and husband-wife duo Jennifer Paz and Anthony Fedorov channeled personal grief and the complexities of Filipino American identity into a groundbreaking musical. You’ll see the sweat of the workshop room, the vulnerability of the development process, and the relentless fight to bring authentic representation to the world’s biggest stage.
"Proud Marys: The Birth of a New Musical" is more than just a "making of" documentary. Like the musical itself, this documentary is about a family, working together to beat the odds and having a little faith in the process that they're building something meaningful and impactful for their world. We're making this film because the story is one folks rarely get to see on the mainstream stage, and like the subject matter itself, the filmmakers are a Filipino family, too, defying stereotypes and going for their version of the American dream. The filmmakers have previous experience creating, writing, producing and directing documentary films, and we have incredibly high standards to live up to, so please know we'll be using all funds raised for this project in the most resourceful and responsible ways possible. The money we raise will be used immediately towards filmmaking and allow us to see this project through to the end.

The documentary will track the project's rapid ascent through the theater industry's most prestigious development pipelines. Viewers will get to see behind-the-scenes footage from critical industry showcases, including: The National Alliance for Musical Theatre (NAMT) 36th Annual Festival of New Musicals, and developmental residencies at the Johnny Mercer Foundation Writers Grove and East West Players, plus the latest and greatest milestone of the project's high-energy 2026 NYC concert at the Baruch Performing Arts Center featuring a powerhouse cast of Filipino-American talent.
Why support us now? This documentary needs to be made, because very few people care enough to highlight the amazing creative contributions and innovations of immigrant artists of color. As children of immigrants, we want to see more of our stories. As dedicated creatives, we believe in all of our stories. Because for too long, our stories have been sidelined or filtered. This documentary captures a pivotal moment in theater history where the "model minority" myth is shattered by a pop-infused roar. Supporting this film means investing in the visibility of the diaspora and ensuring that the grueling, beautiful journey of Filipino American artists is etched into the cinematic record. We are capturing history in real-time.
Help us prove that our heritage, our struggles, and the bright Broadway dreams of our community, are worth every frame.
