Young men are constantly told how to dress and how to act in order to be considered a man in today's society. It is the belief of the director, as well as the cast and crew of "Rebound," that no one set of standards makes someone a man, or a woman, but rather sticking to one's own beliefs does.

Logline: A high school senior is asked to prom by his crush and is lead to believe she wants to have rebound sex with him. Over the course of the following days, he tries to overcome his fear of losing his virginity.

 

 

With “Rebound” I am hoping to provide a critique of toxic masculinity and modern cultural pressures, and how young men can be affected by these kinds of things. I was raised by a single mother for part of my childhood, so it did not always feel like I was becoming enough of a “real man” as compared to my peers growing up. During high school and later college, I started to become more comfortable in my own skin but still felt pressure to behave a certain way. To be honest, I still do. I think many people still feel those kinds of pressures at all stages of life.

This story shows a kid on the verge of becoming a man, but not feeling like he's there in life yet. He feels pressure to behave a certain way in order to feel like he’s worthy of that societal status. Through the help (or well-intended gestures that become hindrances) of his friends and his handling of stressful situations, he is able to discover what kind of man he wants to be as he moves into the next chapter of his life.

 

 

 

High school senior Colton is asked to prom by his longtime crush Jade two days before the dance. She has recently discovered her boyfriend of many years was cheating on her, and this leads Colton's friends to believe that Jade is using him for rebound sex. As Colton deals with both the internal and external pressures of possibly losing his virginity, his best friend Travis devises a series of ill-conceived plans to help ease the stress and anxiety that Colton feels. Over the next couple of days, Colton is faced with issues of toxic masculinity and societal pressures as he prepares for his date with Jade.

One way or another, something big is going to happen on prom night.

 

 

 

Colton (18 yrs old) - A typically introverted high school senior. Raised by a single mother, Colton is often teased by his friends for not behaving manly enough at all times. He has been in love with Jade since they were little kids, so his greatest fear is to be unprepared for his date with her. Luckily, Colton has the help of his best friend Travis to prepare for the big night.

Jade (18 yrs old) - A sweet girl-next-door type. She comes from an upper-middle class family, and is an only child. Her grades are good enough to attend any college she wants to, and she has the looks and popularity to win prom queen this year; at least she did until her boyfriend, high school football captain Brandon, cheated on her and they broke up. Now, who knows if she'll even get any votes?

Travis (18 yrs old) - Colton’s best friend. Like Colton, he has a very close relationship with his mother. Unlike Colton, his father has been around in his life; however, his father has not always been a positive role model for Travis. Travis usually means well and genuinely cares about his friends. He just has a bad habit of objectifying women and exaggerating his sexual exploits (traits he has picked up from his father).

Lena (early 20s) - A free-spirited drug dealer with a really positive energy surrounding her. She is a friend of Travis's because of her friendship with his older brother. Lena is the most sexually-experienced character in "Rebound," and she is not afraid to make it known.

Heather (18 yrs old) - Jade’s best friend. She has had a similar upbringing as Jade, but with the addition of an older and a younger sister. Her grades are not nearly as good as Jade's, but her popularity is comparable. She seems to have a repulsion towards Travis, which seems to make him more intrigued by her.

Gavin (17-18 yrs old) - Travis and Colton’s friend who they regularly play basketball with. Gavin's sex life is what Travis wishes his was. Gavin likes to give Colton a hard time about being a virgin. He thinks his teasing is all in good fun, but Colton doesn't always see it that way.
