The Story
SYNOPSIS:
As Will struggles to cope with the tragic loss of his father, his mother resolves to build a new life by relocating to Houston, TX. Shortly after enrolling in a new school, Will’s behavior becomes increasingly disconcerting as he is haunted by recurring memories of his final moments with his father. The perpetual thought of drowning, which is triggered by the most common daily tasks, consumes his mind until he realizes there is no escape. While his mother continues to process her own grief, she fails to recognize that Will is showing symptoms of PTSD; and as his grasp on reality begins to slip, Will becomes determined to hold onto the fleeting memories of his father by any means necessary. A determination that drives him to violence and causes his homeroom teacher to misdiagnose his PTSD with ADHD.
Inspired by real events, this film observes one of the loneliest disorders and the avoidable struggles that children recovering from life altering traumas face. We are wholeheartedly committed to telling stories that raise awareness of the unheard challenges facing people around the world with invisible disabilities and it would be an honor to continue our mission with YOUR SUPPORT!
REMEDIAL draws inspiration from Barry Jenkin’s MOONLIGHT, Ryan Coogler’s FRUITVALE STATION, and Damien Chazelle's WHIPLASH.
Our creative vision for this film is one that embraces darkness and shadow. As our protagonist navigates the tangled web of his past, we plan to use documentary shooting techniques such as hand held camera shots, long takes and minimalist lighting aesthetics to achieve a moody, but realistic mise-en-scene.
The look of REMEDIAL will also create an immersive experience as the high-contrast world will be divided between shadow and light with an expressionistic use of blues, reds and greens. Using these techniques will help to steer us away from portraying life as we wish it were, but instead capture life with all of its darkness and shadows, as it actually is.
Research shows that about 6.4 million children have been diagnosed with ADHD, a very serious and real disability. Although children under the age of 16 must show symptoms for six months or more in order to be diagnosed, psychologists and health experts believe that children are being grossly misdiagnosed with ADHD in the USA... Nearly one million children to be exact.
The study proves that people with disabilities are one of the most underrepresented minority in Hollywood and it is my hope that REMEDIAL will disrupt that pattern, and serve as a catalyst for change. Additionally, your investment in this film goes far beyond the completion of this project. We see REMEDIAL as a crucial stepping stone that can take this director and members of her team into the next phase of their careers as artists and open up a world of possibilities that were not previously available.
Our initial plans to film REMEDIAL in 2020 were brought to an unexpected halt due to COVID-19, but we have not let the pandemic derail our plans. Although we are crowdfunding for multiple reasons, we to want to ensure that we have the necessary PPE, COVID compliance officers and testing, which takes upwards of 10-15 percent of the overall budget. While we all want to get back to work, it's imperative that safety be our number one priority moving forward!
STRETCH GOALS!!!
The budget we have set is the minimum needed to make the film at the professional level. We have all been asked to work for credit, in unsafe conditions, or to chip in for the meal. We are ending that culture. We'll have a safe production full of well-fed, compensated people.
Beyond that:
If we raise $22,000 - we'll be able to pay our crew/cast appropriately, which is extremely important to us!
If we raise $25,000 - we'll have completely covered our Post-Production cost!
If we raise $30,000 - we'll have covered marketing and distribution costs!
