As one of the most ethnically diverse societies, until now Indonesia still struggles with discrimination. Seragam tells the tale of how egotistical intolerance thrives within a small community amongst members of different backgrounds, and how big of an impact little gestures of compassion can do.

Mission Statement
Seragam is a reflection on the diversity in Indonesia - a journey towards tolerance, affection, and fostering mutual love. Our diverse crew comes from all over the world - Indonesia, America, Finland, and Mexico! These amazing individuals came together to tell this important story.About The Project
It is not uncommon for someone to be conflicted internally when they’re being judged by the society or even someone in their inner circle. Agus, a slaughterhouse worker, lives with his wife and eight-year-old son in a small community in Bekasi, Indonesia.
To make ends meet, he has no choice but to work part-time at a slaughterhouse run by Arif, his authoritarian father-in-law who he doesn’t get along with. As a former Buddhist, he is still in the process of compromising his beliefs and has grown very anxious because of it. On top of that, Agus wants to teach Manggala, his son, a lesson of compassion when he finds out that his son got in a fight.
Agus tries to enforce boundaries to protect and lead his family, however Arif always belittles him and interferes in his family businesses. Agus also has to deal with his neighborhood that tends to resist or ignore his presence as a minority.
Besides the complex dynamic between Agus and Arif, Seragam also focuses on the powerful non-verbal communication between Agus and Manggala. Here, we show how a child has the intelligence to see through the adversity their parents have to endure.
We will also see how hypocrisy from different characters is shown as a human tendency that can’t be avoided unless identified objectively - by separating it from our true self and looking into our own consciences.
This short aims to establish tolerance, compassion, and harmony by seeing the roots of the human problems experienced by the characters in this story.
I was born and raised in Bekasi at one of the most diverse suburban environments. Residents celebrated pluralism without exception. Playing hide and seek or soccer and playing chase with my friends, who had a variety of backgrounds, were some of the things I loved to do most on a daily basis. Growing up in a Buddhist family, I was taught to be accepting for other people’s different cultural and religious beliefs.
Until one day when I was playing with my friends, a group of kids around my age started throwing stones at me while shouting unsavory slurs. Never had I realized that I was different. A difference I couldn’t change. I then pondered on why they would act in such way. Slowly but surely, I realized that these kids learned the behavior from the adult figures in their life.
Seen from the perspectives of an adult and a child, Seragam is a reflection of the diversity in Indonesia; a journey towards tolerance. According to Indonesia’s ideology “Bhinneka Tunggal Ika” or “Unity in Diversity”, this short discusses issues regarding the differences that are seen as a big problem on the surface and to explain that all arises from an egotistical complication that could be experience by anyone, anywhere.
Rio Dewanto as AGUS
You’d recognize Rio Dewanto on magazines, advertisements, films, and TV series. He had his career breakthrough from Tanda Tanya, a film by Hanung Bramantyo. Since then, he became a rising and high-demand actor in various Indonesian films such as Modus Anomali (Ritual) that won the SXSW festival, Filosofi Kopi, Letters from Prague, and many others. As the main lead, Agus, in Seragam, we believe Rio will be able to help us deliver the important message of this movie.
Slamet Rahardjo as ARIF
Slamet is a senior Indonesian actor who began his career in the world of theater and film in the 70s. So far, he has starred in more than 40 Indonesian film titles. Mamet - his nickname - has received various awards both domestically and internationally for both his work as an actor and director. Currently he is the chair of the art culture foundation at Institusi Kesenian Jakarta (The Arts Institute of Jakarta). We’re beyond humbled to have him in Seragam as Arif, a very crucial character of the theme.
