Story
Mission Statement
Silhouettes explores the challenging relationships between younger and older generations and the battle of ever-changing ideology. Our director, Sarah Brill, is a Jewish female director who specializes in creating feminist films. In addition, our crew is comprised of student filmmakers.About The Project
SILHOUETTES is the fourth short film directed by Sarah Brill. Silhouettes tells the story of Emily, a kind and compassionate young girl who seeks to befriend her new neighbor Jack, a reserved boy with a dark past. As Emily grows closer to Jack, she begins to unearth something evil within him.
SILHOUETTES deals with the loss of innocence through older generations instilling poisonous ideas into children, and how this goes on to affect them throughout life. From sexism and racism to religious fanaticism, and homophobia, children are easily corrupted and manipulated by the environments they are raised in.
Director Sarah Brill draws inspiration from many of the staple female horror/thriller directors in the industry. From the dreary atmosphere and stunning visuals in Jennifer Kent's "The Babadook" to the dark, socially driven humor of Julia Durcournau's "Raw," to the gripping psychological horror in Lynne Ramsy's, "We Need To Talk About Kevin." Sarah hopes to make her mark on the industry someday as an up in coming female horror director. SILHOUETTES will be the first of many horror films that Sarah plans to direct.
DIRECTORS STATEMENT
Directed by Sarah Brill
SILHOUETTES began with hearing a strikingly unique pitch from Quintin Smith. I was drawn to how peculiar yet incessantly creepy it sounded. Immediately I knew I wanted to work on this, and swiftly accepted his offer for me to direct this project. Horror has always been a genre that has enthralled me and that I felt that the unique stories, often able to say things that no other genre could say, have emerged from. For some reason still, there was hesitation for me to dip my toes into horror, I felt that it was the genre that often presented the most challenges and often fell into problematic cliches. Until I started digging deeper into my own work and the work of my greatest influencers did I realize that horror could be infused in so many unexpected things, and left me with so many questions, constantly influencing the way I thought about stories. Additionally, in the past few years, I have felt that there has been a sort of "reemergence" of horror, specifically in the indie market with the majority of these films dealing with the psychological and social elements of horror. Films like "The Babadook," "Raw" and "We Need to Talk About Kevin," further proved this to me and these talented female filmmakers have been my greatest inspiration moving forward.
