Mission Statement
SOON IS NOW was founded out of our belief that art can reach the hearts and minds of audiences on climate change & inspire activism. We are a group of artists, performers, theater professionals and environmentalists bringing art & action on the climate crisis to Scenic Hudson's Long Dock Park.About The Project
SOON IS NOW is a day of climate theater, art and activism in Beacon, NY. This year it will be held on Saturday, Sept 24th from 2pm-5pm. Inspired by Climate Change Theatre Action, a worldwide series of readings and performances of short climate change plays presented biennially to coincide with the United Nations COP meetings, SOON IS NOW brings audiences on a curated tour throughout a riverfront landscape, where they encounter climate-themed performances and artistic interventions by established theater, dance and visual artists. Local activist groups offer education, workshops and guided local & federal actions audiences can take during the course of the afternoon. With your participation we will make this a truly sustainable, recurring annual event in our community.
Edwin Torres, And My Mother's Mother's Other, SOON IS NOW, 2021The location for SOON IS NOW is Long Dock Park, a former industrial railroad siding and hazardous dumping site transformed into a gorgeous green, resilient public park by Scenic Hudson and landscape architects Reed-Hilderbrand. This land was originally the territory of the Wappinger, Mohican, and Munsee peoples, in a region with a vital history of environmental activism rooted in Scenic Hudson's fight to save Storm King Mountain from industry and Pete Seeger's fight for an unpolluted Hudson River.
Twinkle Burke, What We Give Back by Madeline Sayet, Climate Change Theatre Action 2021 collection, SOON IS NOW, 2021This year we have a great slate of performers & content: Jaanika Peerna with Coco Karol performing Glacier Elegy, Twinkle Burke and Stephanie Anuwe performing "how to hold water: a spell for adaptive living" by Erika Dickerson-Despenza (a Climate Change Theatre Action 2021 play); Edwin Torres conducting a poet's orchestra of 6 performers titled "Water's Way: A Poet's Choir for The Hudson River" with Latasha Diggs, Jayden Featherstone, E.J. McAdams, Urayoán Noel, Kristin Prevallet and Tamalyn Miller; Elise Knudson and dancers performing a new piece on George Trakas's Beacon Point to Lou Reed's Hudson River Wind Meditations; Connie Hall performing The Penguin by Nicholas Billon (Climate Change Theatre Action 2021 play);cellist Alex Waterman performing an original composition;Tom King and Katiana Rangel performing an original piece about extinct birds and FRUIT&ROT, an imprint that designs and publishes printed matter on the intersection of art and ecology, will have items for sale.

This year we have New Yorkers for Clean Power, Sustainable Hudson Valley, Climate Reality Hudson Valley & Catskills chapter, Beacon Conservation Advisory Committee, Outdoor Promise and Fareground attending.
We are also thrilled to be part of Sustainable Hudson Valley's Climate Solutions Week.
Please join us in person on Saturday, Sept 24th from 2pm-5pm in Scenic Hudson's Long Dock Park in Beacon, NY. Free and open to the public. At 2pm Environment groups are spotlighted.
At 3pm we start the performance tours and run 3 tours every 20 minutes.
We will add a fourth tour at 4pm if there is demand.

Too often artists are asked to work for free. While we are extremely grateful that last year everyone volunteered their time we don't want to ask this of artists moving forward. We hope you agree that artists deserve to be paid for their work and that you will help our amazing participants with your contributions. We also need funding to cover lunch, transportation and liability insurance on the park.

SOON IS NOW is a sponsored project of the New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA). New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA)”. NYFA is a 501(c)(3), tax-exempt organization. Contributions on behalf of SOON IS NOW will be acknowledged by NYFA for tax purposes when the donation is $250 or greater. We have noted which contributions are eligible for the deduction.
Stretch goal: We need to raise at least 80% of our budget to collect the funds. If we don't raise this amount we won't collect any funds for the event. However if we raise more than our goal we will use these funds to pay more than the minimum we set of $300 per performer which is a modest honorarium. We will also increase the honorariums for the producers, directors and support staff. In addition we will pay a cameraman and sound recordist to document the day. Our total stretch goal is:$13,300

Elizabeth Clark, performing an excerpt from Seeds Under Nuclear Winter, An Earth Opera, SOON IS NOW, 2021History of the project & future plans: SOON IS NOW began in 2021 as part of Climate Change Theatre Action. We participated in the 2021 season timed with the UN Climate Change Conference (COP 26) in Glasgow.
Building on the success of last year, we are implementing the project to continue on an annual basis. We hope to grow the project to incorporate visual art installations in the River Center and support new experimental works by performers about the climate crisis.
Chantal Bilodeau, co-founder of Climate Change Theatre Action has said: "There need to be more playwrights putting climate narratives out there to counter the apocalyptic scenarios that dominate the story. What motivates people is a personal connection.”
This event brings community together around art that inspires collective citizen activism on the climate crisis at a time when we must act now. It's not too late!

Printed broadsheets with collage and lyrical essay mix science, historical and personal accounts to describe foraging and processing the plant. This printed piece is accompanied by a series of flamework glass vessels containing lichen dye. This work engages a symbiotic species to elaborate on the concept of interspecies dependency.

This risograph-printed broadsheet integrates ecologist Richard Karban’s research on airborne communication in sagebrush plants* with Marianne von Willemer’s love poem to Goethe that addresses the wind. It also served as a score for a live performance at Sagehen Creek Field Station in Tahoe National Forest. Audience members, along with incognito performers, were guided along a path, and onto a foot bridge where they discovered stacks of the broadsheets. Silk scrims dyed with sagebrush, wolf lichen and lodgepole pine bark, harvested on site, set the stage for a reading, in the round, of the poem Suleika I.

About This Team
Eve Morgenstern, Founder, Director, Producer of SOON IS NOW is a photographer, film director/producer and environmental activist.She has received grants for her work from The New York State Council on the Arts, Chicken and Egg Pictures, The George Gund Foundation, The Park Foundation, nextPix/firstPix and The Playboy Foundation. She has also been awarded artist residencies at MacDowell and the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council (Workspace). Her environmental film Cheshire, Ohio about the buyout of an entire town by a polluting coal-fired power plant has screened in festivals in the US, Canada and Asia; won first place documentary feature at the Knoxville Film Festival, the Free Press Award at The Columbus International Film and Video Festival, and the Special Jury Award at The Frozen River Film Festival. The film is distributed by Bullfrog Films and ovid.tv and continues to be screened by activists and community groups fighting coal and fossil fuels across the country. Eve's photographic work on the US foreclosure crises has been exhibited at Bildmuseet in Umeå, Sweden, the Midwest Center for Photography and was featured in a special magazine edition of Le Monde. Eve is co-chair of the Climate Reality Hudson Valley & Catskills chapter and lives in Beacon, NY with her daughter Chloe and her pandemic puppy Amber.
Connie Hall, Producer, Director of SOON IS NOW, is a creator, performer, and producer of new work in New York and abroad. From 2006-2018, Connie ran Conni’s Avant Garde Restaurant (2012 NY Innovative Theatre Awards for Outstanding Ensemble and Performance Art Production), performing and cooking for thousands in Cleveland, Cambridge, Louisville, Nashville, and New York City. She is a repeat performer at Shakespeare in Stonington (ME), and she has enjoyed longtime collaborations as a contributing performer with Aya Ogawa, Jeanette Yew, Jeffrey Frace, Paul Bargetto/undergroundzero festival, and International WOW Company. Connie currently freelances with New Dramatists and Upstate Films, and she has served on the staffs of Theatre Development Fund and Theatre Communications Group. She holds an MFA in Acting from Columbia University. Connie lives in Beacon with her husband, John Sochocky. She has 3 giant step kids and a rescue pup.
