Set in volcanic Guatemala, a young girl falls victim to her strict, traditional culture––deceived into a future as a child-bride. But, as soon as she discovers an unlikely friend, a new danger erupts. This film offers insight into the ongoing oppression many truly face, living in Latin America.

Mission Statement
Made up of a diverse Cast+Crew, we seek to portray this story honestly and authentically. With this film, we hope to transform the negative stereotypes surrounding immigration by shedding light on the issues affecting communities in Latin America–such as child marriage.About The Project
The Story
A young Guatemalan girl leaves one night to go to a party, but when she arrives––it's really her wedding... to a grown man. Unfortunately, this incident is all too common.
Why it Matters Now
There is an overwhelming degree of child marriages that continue to occur, despite many countries efforts, worldwide, to make the practice illegal. Furthermore, there are still countries who carry on deflecting the blame, considering it a cultural controversy-rather than a crime of state-issue.
In truth, there are concrete causes we can work on to eliminate these situations:
-
Level of education
-
Adolescent pregnancy
-
Traditional attitudes
-
Poverty
( More can be seen at: www.girlsnotbrides.org )
Government oversight continues to include gender-based violence, anti-LGBTQ+ attacks, domestic abuse, and gang violence—without stable enough institutions to protect the victims.
With changes to asylum law and policy in the United States, it is significantly more challenging for victims to establish claims, even with their severe circumstances, so they are forced to return to the same abuses that prompted their efforts to escape.
We need to spread awareness of this problem in modern-day Latin America, so we can face it head-on. This film will help to expose the persisting horror of child-marriage.
The Impact
With Su Promesa, we pledge to not romanticize or detract from the reality of child marriage. Instead, we intend to reveal the true experience that real people endure in Guatemala, by making a film with complex characters and complex challenges. We refuse to tell a story that generalizes a nation, a race, or a community.
Our mission is to introduce people to an intimate, moving story that captures the serious circumstances of those who may be seeking asylum in the United States. Immigrants are individuals, and every person has a story to tell––many of which are similar to this one.
This film will help to explain the struggles in Latin America and show how inequality is a battle that has no borders, an enemy that waves no flag. There are actions we can all take in our daily lives to protect others. What We Need

About This Team
Rafael Soto was born and raised in NYC. As a child, he could be found staring at the housing projects in the distance, daydreaming about the lives of the people there and breaking out into “Don’t Cry for Me, Argentina” for his “descamisados.” Upon graduating from Pace University, he moved to Los Angeles, attended the Baron Brown Acting Studio, and was cast in several indie films. Disillusioned by the clichéd Latino parts available, he dove into screenwriting. His first pilot, a dark comedy entitled Broker Boys, follows a young man from the Bronx who after the loss of his family goes to work on Wall Street to make fast money so he can end his own life. His most recent feature, Scared to Fly, tells the story of Yaya, who gets diagnosed with cancer and decides to take a spur of the moment cross-country road trip with her aging son, somewhat senile husband, and sick dog to surprise her family, in Los Angeles.
Born and raised in Paris, Stephanie Renaud, worked in the French film industry, mostly in Art Department. She moved to Los Angeles in 2016 to study Film Science at the Los Angeles Film School. She graduated in October 2017 "Summa Cum Laude" and became a member of the National Honor Society of the Entertainment Arts.
Stephanie contributed to many projects in film, TV, commercial and theatre as 1st Assistant-Director, Production Assistant and Art/ Scenic Department.
In 2018, Stephanie co-founded Visual Wizards Productions, an end to end production company focused on storytelling through visual content: film, music video, commercial, events, live performances etc.
She is a writer, a director, and a producer.
Matt Stevens is currently a manager in the Financial Aid Department at Los Angeles Film School. His excellent interpersonal skills have quickly moved him from individual financial aid counselor to a supervisory position in which he manages several employees. His education experiences include traditional coursework at New Mexico State University and non-traditional coursework at Full Sail University. However, it was his participation in the Second City Conservatory of Improvisation that honed his abilities to teach and motivate the people that he works with. His ability to read people and their needs allows him to make connections in a deep and profound way. Matt’s entrepreneurial spirit is demonstrated in his multi-potentiality. He continues to follow passions in photography, videography, vocal performance, developing educational videos and writing. Matt’s altruistic spirit is manifested by his donation of time and talents to small non-profits such as Alamogordo Musical Theatre and A Children’s Theatre of Mesilla Valley to International non-profits such as SENG (Supporting Emotional Needs to the Gifted). This giving spirit is also demonstrated in his loyalty to assist his friends and colleagues in following their passions.
Justin Scott Lawrence is an American filmmaker who lives in Los Angeles, California. Justin is originally from Toccoa, Georgia. He lived in Atlanta, Georgia, up until 2004 when he moved to L.A. Justin was a competition clogger as a child, sang in a boy band called "Lucky", acted, directed, produced, and has done voiceover work for radio commercials.
Jacklyn Michelle Braun, Born and raised in Douglas Arizona. Growing up she participated in competitive and extreme sports. During College, she landed an internship with Disney, where she discovered her passion for the entertainment industry. After completing her internship, she moved to Los Angeles and completed her Bachelor’s in Film and Entertainment Business at The Los Angeles Film School. Jacklyn has worked on a plethora of projects with artists including Pink, Justin Timberlake, Kristen Wiig, and Julia Roberts.
