Story
Mission Statement
This film illustrates the importance of centering Black women’s narratives and lived experiences, particularly that of everyday Black women. The team behind The Beauty in Trying is primarily women led and has vast experience in advocating for and telling the stories of marginalized communities.About The Project
The Beauty in Trying is a visual exploration of healing through the art of dance. It tells the story of Samaia Muhammad who danced all her life... until she didn’t. Samaia grew up dancing, continuing throughout her high school and college years. After college, an opportunity that was intended to extend her time in dance, instead led to an abrupt end and disconnection from dance. She, like many individuals, was forced to step away from her craft, to give way to life. It wasn’t until several years later, in the midst of personal trauma, that Samaia’s body let her know she must dance again in order to heal.
Because Samaia’s journey is deeply tied to her love of and need to move, to dance, it is vital to depart from the traditional documentary format and tell her story through dance. Recreations and original choreography will bring Samaia's journey in dance to life.
SAMAIA MUHAMMAD
Samaia is a dancer, fitness model and former fundraising executive. She is the daughter of Samuel Muhammad and the late Quilla Lanes of Arkansas. After several years of life-changing traumatic events, Samaia is driven to tell Black stories by starting with her own. She began commercial modeling at an early age and later grew to dance with professional companies, choreograph productions and do voice-over work. Samaia’s career has been primarily in the non-profit sector. She has done development and events for the Clinton Foundation, Advancement Project and the National Restaurant Association.
The Beauty in Trying is Samaia’s personal effort to heal through creation.DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT
To be an artist is a lifelong exercise in love, in faith, and in dedication. That love, dedication and artistry does not end simply because a person is not pursuing their art as their career. Every week, individuals engage in little acts of art. After work they go home to paint, or attend dance classes at the local studio, or play piano at church. They are artists. For most of my professional career, I have been honored to work with many of these individuals, creating opportunities for them to learn more about and participate in the arts they love. Seeing the joy on the faces of people taking a class with a dance company they love or watching a musician break down the intricacies of a musical passage reaffirmed to me the importance of art for art’s sake. That is what drew me to Samaia’s story. Similar to arts patrons I’ve supported my entire career, Samaia began to understand that in order for her to, not just thrive, but indeed to survive, art had to be reintegrated into her life. The Beauty in Trying is a testament to people for whom active engagement with art is vital for their emotional wellness.

Once The Beauty in Trying is complete we intend to submit it into several film festivals, so that we can share Samaia's story and encourage audiences to reconnect with their artist within.
