Our film increases representation and inclusion as it is spearheaded by women. The film will bring audiences into the experience of someone in the throes of untreated mental illness, written and acted by an artist who himself has struggled with with obsessive compulsions & intrusive thoughts.About The Project
SYNOPSIS
We begin in a world where an epidemic of strange and unexplained disappearances haunt everyday life. Our protagonist is a young man living in the midst of this terror, trying to make sense of the events that are occuring around him and keep himself safe. As we learn more about the world and experience his growing sense of existential danger, we begin to question the objectivity of his perspective. Can these dissappearances be stopped, or is the truth even more dangerous than he realizes?
ARTISTIC STATEMENT
from the writer:
My whole life I’ve dealt with intrusive thoughts, creeping in at all angles of weakness at any time: night or day. Sometimes they are small, sometimes they are big. Sometimes they make no sense to a rational human being, but they are always very real to me.
I was diagnosed with obsessive compulsive disorder at the age of twelve. Since then, I've been on and off various medications. Some helped some did not. None of them cured it. The scariest thing about the thoughts and the compulsions is that they ARE you. They’re your voice convincing you that everything is not okay. YOU are the one telling yourself to pour bleach on your body and in your cuts to keep yourself from being contaminated. YOU are the one telling yourself that everyone on the train can read your thoughts, so you have to create "fake thoughts" for them to read so they don't learn your secrets. What secrets? I don’t know. These thoughts, these compulsions: having to wash my hands every five minutes, or swallow rubbing alcohol, or not being able to do something as simple as opening a door, or not being able to answer the phone because you KNOW that it has been wire-tapped and you KNOW your next door neighbor is watching you to have you taken in.
The thoughts cause you to create a space where you become more and more isolated and go further and further inward. You lose friends, family, and sometimes you cut yourself off from the ones who DO stay to keep them safe from the ones who are “after you.” You are left with no one but yourself and your other self: the sickness. The thing that is you but not. The thing that mimics you in every single way because it knows the only thing that can convince you, is you. I wrote this story while on the cusp of a panic attack. I hope that it can give some insight into the minds of those who suffer, and to help other people who suffer know that they are not alone. At least that is my hope: to show it's not crazy to the person hearing it, especially when the voice they hear is their own, no matter what everyone else says.
And that's the danger of it.

About This Team
Director | Laura Moss
Laura is an NYC-based director and production designer. She was named one of Filmmaker Magazine’s 25 New Faces of Independent Film. Her work has screened at MoMA, Sundance, Telluride, Berlin and Cannes. Her recent short film, ‘Allen Anders – Live at the Comedy Castle (circa 1987)’ premiered at SXSW 2018. Her previous short, ‘Fry Day’, screened at SXSW, Tribeca Film Festival and Clermont-Ferrand. It is currently online as a Vimeo staff pick. Laura’s first feature will be produced by Fangoria Films in 2019.

Erika is a filmmaker/performer who lives to collaborate. She loves helping her fellow artist hone and develop their specific and unique voice.
