Trashy Booty features two trans women, who will be played by trans actors. We seek to create more opportunities for trans actors on screen. We also push back against discrimination within the film industry, by including trans people, women, and people of color in our crew and creative process.About The Project
ABOUT TRASHY BOOTY
I came up with the idea for Trashy Booty, a live action short, after I saw a viral news story about a hitchhiking robot who met a violent end in Philadelphia. The robot was a social experiment in human interactions with robots. The story really caught my attention, and I became fascinated with how the press covered it. I often feel bombarded by viral news stories and social media. Despite the availability of so much information, I rarely see stories covered in depth that really get to the heart of issues that matter to me.
I started writing outlines, and I imagined a story that shared the complexities of trans friendship. Over the last few years, film and television shows have presented more and more trans narratives, but many of them continue to focus on coming out stories and traumatic experiences. Few films and shows feature stories of friendship and support between trans women. My goal with Trashy Booty is to make a small contribution to the handful of productions that share more aspects of the trans experience.
I started writing a story about realistic experiences of trans women, especially younger trans women, who are still figuring life out. The story gradually shifted to a combination of dumpster diving, friendship, and a mysterious robot set on a mission to spread human kindness at all costs.
Trashy Booty shares a story of trans joy and triumph against a world that never bothered to hear the story of Kat and Willow. This unlikely team might just be the thing that we all need to save us from an unkind world.ABOUT BROKEN PIER
Broken Pier formed as a partnership between Iris Devins and Rafael "Q" Quinde. We created Trashy Booty as a followup to our last short film, After the Date, and a way to launch our new production unit, Broken Pier. After the Date premiered at Frameline, and it screened at festivals, such as Hollyshorts, Athens International Film + Video Festival, Mammoth Film Festival, and Portland Film Festival.
We took on the name Broken Pier, because we met on an old, busted pier in Philadelphia. We met in an unconventional way, and we thought that the name was a great way to describe our work, which features stories that often go ignored.
We're also developing new short and features films. It's very difficult to break into the film industry, and we hope that Trashy Booty will help us get started. Your support is greatly appreciated, no matter how small.
BEHIND OUR PROCESS
We will use the funds from this crowdfunding campaign to pay cast and crew for Trashy Booty. It's really important to us that the cast and crew be paid, because film shoots are a lot of work. Q and I won't make money on the film, but we want to make sure that everyone else is compensated for their time.
We also need to pay rental fees for equipment, such as a digital cinema camera, a lens kit, lights, a gimbal, and a car mount. We were fortunate to receive an Art and Change Grant from the Leeway Foundation, and we will use this funding for pre-production costs, such as hiring a professional casting director, constructing the robot prop, and buying needed items for production design.
We set our funding goal to $10,000, which will be the minimum to get this project going. That goal still involves us taking on a lot of cost for the film. If we're able to reach the $10,000 before the end of the campaign, we will add three stretch goals, which would cover: 1. all production costs, 2. post production, and 3. festival submission fees.

About This Team
Iris Devins, writer/director
Iris Devins is a writer, director, and producer. The Sundance Institute selected her to participate in the Screenwriters Intensive, and she was a 2017 Sundance Knight Fellow. The Leeway Foundation awarded her with a 2018 Transformation Award. She recently finished a festival run with her narrative short, After the Date. The film portrays a romance between a trans woman and a straight man. After the Date premiered at Frameline in 2017, and later screened at festivals such as Hollyshorts, Athens International Film + Video Festival, Mammoth Film Festival, and Portland Film Festival. She received funding from the Leeway Foundation Art and Change Grant for her upcoming short, Trashy Booty. The film is a dark comedy about two dumpster diving trans women who find a hitchhiking robot in the outskirts of Philadelphia. She is currently developing her first narrative feature, Angie Star. The film is supported by a grant from the Sundance Institute with additional support from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.
Rafael "Q" Quinde, producer
Rafael “Q” Quinde is an emerging producer. He produced the narrative short After the Date, which premiered at Frameline and later screened at festivals, such as Hollyshorts, Portland Film Festival, and Athens International Film + Video Festival. The film won an audience award at qFLIX Philadelphia for best trans short film. He is currently in pre-production for Trashy Booty, a narrative short film about two dumpster diving trans women who come across a hitchhiking robot. He is also developing a post-apocalyptic web series.
Marie Hinson, director of photography
A cinematographer and artist originally from the mountains of Appalachia, Marie moved to Philadelphia for an MFA in Temple University’s Film program. In addition to freelance work for lm, commercial and corporate clients, she is an instructor at Scribe Video Center and a member of the Vox Populi artist collective. Her solo and collaborative work has shown at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Crane Arts, RAIR, Pilot Projects, as well as Frameline, Montre- al Underground, BlackStar, Athens International, and Hollyshorts festivals.
Broken Pier, production company
Broken Pier is a Philadelphia based film production company, founded by writer/director Iris Devins and her producing partner, Rafael “Q” Quinde, in 2019. We named our company Broken Pier after a busted, old pier in Philadelphia where we first met. Our stories highlight underrepresented narratives, and just as our connection formed in an unexpected place, our work breaks down tired, dated barriers in the film industry.
