Violet Butterfield is told through a 1960's kaleidoscopic lens. While the tone of our story is light-hearted and groovy, it reveals a rather macabre message. This film assures us that it’s normal to be different and our lives improve when we live authentically as ourselves. Own your weirdness!

Mission Statement

Our South Louisiana film team serves retro-inspired, unapologetic horror/comedy while bringing to the forefront those who aren’t usually recognized in the independent horror community including women, people of color, and the LGBTQ+ community.

The Story

Our Project

Violet Butterfield tells the story of a mortician who does a little more than just beautifies her clients. Anticipating a quiet night in her dark yet groovy mortuary, Violet receives a visit from a new client and discovers that sometimes a person feels they cannot authentically live their best life until after they're dead.

Our story is told through a kaleidoscopic palette of colors and textures, which works in company with our unhindered dialogue delivered by our cast of charismatic characters.

Incense, peppermints, and beehives. Oh, my!
The hypnotic decade of the 1960's fuels the influence of this esthetic.
This film's inspiration derives from a variety of favorites like Death Becomes Her, Bride of Frankenstein, Reanimator, Blow Up, Peeping Tom, Female Trouble, Hairspray, and Beyond the Valley of the Dolls.

We are serving horror, camp, fashion, drag, tunes, and even a bit of the supernatural.

Our team is gearing up for this next adventure in filmmaking-land.
We are excited to bring our group of collaborating creatives and together fashion
this new tale of dark wonderment to share with the world!

Brooke Cellars-Writer/Director

Brooke has been writing horror stories since she was a little girl. Being the oddball every time she steps into a room, horror feels like her only true connection and escape especially growing up. As an adult, she finds that telling stories through horror film is the most superb and gratifying way to express herself. However, she didn't truly have the opportunity or even had the confidence to make a film until she was 37 when she attended film school at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. That's when she met producer Madeleine Yawn and cinematographer Levi Porter. They have been collaborating ever since and she adores working with them. Brooke hopes that her stories resonate with as many people as possible for they are personal to her. She's exceedingly grateful to have the opportunity to tell them in the only way she knows how; through writing and filmmaking.

Meet the Spooky & Kooky Characters!

Violet Butterfield

Who is Violet Butterfield really?

Miss Butterfield has been working in the mortuary making stiffs look like they

stepped off a magazine cover with her makeup skills!

She has been doing this job way too long, but she loves her work and even though some

of her clients (Shirley) work her nerves, she cares about helping every single one.

She has the style of Kate Pierson, the crass of Patsy Stone...

...the attitude of American Mary, and the beauty of The Bride.

Meet Marvin!

New Client Marvin is the first to interrupt Violet's night. She takes the timid, well-dressed, daper gentlemen into the throws of her mortuary. He's searched everywhere for Violet's help. He shares a big secret with her during his visit.

And last but certainly not least.....Shirley!

Shirley likes to barge in regularly on any night she chooses and of course she chose tonight. Shirely has been one of Violet's long...looong time clients.

OUTTA SIGHT!

We believe in our project enough to want to put the work into creating this beauty of a beast, but we are gonna need your HELP!

Our team is ready for that oozing green light so that we can create our MONSTER!

The Southern Gothic Entertainment (formerly known as '1981 Pictures') team has been creating creatures together since we met in film school down here in South Louisiana! From our first student project PUMPKYN to our most recent project THE CHILLS PART 2 (trailer)---the sequel to our multi award-winning 80's inspired slasher film THE CHILLS which we filmed for under $100!

We are working towards raising a budget of $7k with a stretch goal of $9k.

Our team would like to put our budget toward film equipment, far-out costumes, killer practical special fx, , building the grooviest mortuary room ever, and taking care/feeding our hardworking crew including COVID 19 prevention and testing on site!

We are humbled by any help you can offer whether it is a pledge, a share on social media, or even loaning a prop! Hey! You could even call your friends and blab to them about it on the telephone!

Can you dig it?

Six feet under, we hope.
