About This Team
Lovely to meet you!
We are a team of do-it-all / do-it-yourself-ers with a proven track record of festival-screened and distributed films. Along with our combined two decades of experience making movies, we are mentored by Oscar/Emmy/Golden Globe winner Gary Goetzman and the team at Playtone, and are grateful for their support!
Joanna Bowzer
Director
Joanna Bowzer is a director, writer and producer with projects in film and theater. Her projects have won awards at over a dozen festivals, and have been shown at over 40 including: Slamdance Film Festival, Palm Springs International Film Festival, Catalina International Film Festival, New York City International Film Festival, Manhattan Film Festival and New York Shorts Fest. Her work has been described as ‘casually sardonic’ which is apropos given that is how many of her friends and family describe her as well.
In addition the above, Joanna also has over a decade of experience working with start-ups and brands focusing on digital media, marketing and business development. She posts pictures of her dog regularly on Instagram.
Laura Cheek
Executive Producer
Laura Cheek is a founder and Senior Creative Director of cARTel: Collaborative Arts L.A.: an all-female experiential production agency (wearecartel.org). She is part of the team that created BROKE L.A. and the No Budget Film Festival, two of the largest and fastest-growing independent arts festivals in Los Angeles. Laura has also worked for Sundance, LA Film Fest, the Indian Film Festival Los Angeles, and SXSW. Laura earned her theatre chops at the University of Texas at Austin where she directed, produced, and/or acted in over 30 projects on stage and screen. We Are Gathered Here (2012) was her assistant directorial debut in L.A and she couldn't be more thrilled to be back with this insanely talented cast & crew to revisit and recapture this story.
Caity Ware
Producer
Caity Ware is a UCLA alum with a lifetime of performing and decade of producing under her belt. She spends her days working with the brilliant folks at Playtone, and her nights producing short films, web series, and music videos for her friends. Her most recent short, "Everythings's Gonna Be Okay," will premiere at the 2018 Florida Film Festival, and her two previous shorts received distribution deals after successful festival runs. When not acting or producing, Caity bakes. Her peanut butter bars have made men propose. She finally said yes to one, resulting in a friend's pilot being filmed at their wedding. www.caityware.com
Matthew Waterson
Producer
Matthew Waterson went to boarding school in England (No, he does not know Harry or William. Yes, the dining hall looked like Hogwarts.) and then began his career in television. He worked for Witt Thomas Harris Productions, on The Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Day Telethon, The Peoples Choice Awards, Grammys, Golden Globes, Oscars, Academy of Country Music Awards, Big Brother, Blind Date, Victor Awards and the film The Pleasure Drivers. He co-owned a VFX company that provided CGI for 2012, Cell, and Snow White and the Huntsman. Since leaving VFX he has focused on producing His voice work can be heard in Marvel Animated Universe as “Nightmare,” on Guillermo Del Toro’s Trollhunters, in Fallout 4, Halo: the Fall of Reach, and Conan Exiles. He has one American parent, one British parent, and spends every 4th of July committing acts of sedition against himself.
Alina DeBellis
Associate Producer / Director of Living Room Tour
Alina DeBellis is a writer and the original director of We Are Gathered Here for cARTel’s living room series. Alina has her B.A. in Theatrical Direction at UCLA’s school of Theater, Film and Television, receiving the Emerging Director Award in 2008. She has directed off broadway in New York at The Public Theater and Manhattan Repertory Theater, and several living rooms and stages across Los Angeles. In 2012, she began her collaboration with cARTel and developed We Are Gathered Here. She loves developing new works so much, she reprised her partnership with George Usher at cARTel’s Sound/Stage series directing The Auditor. Currently, Alina is working on her first novel and talks a lot with her two best friends in her podcast Chick Talk With. www.chicktalkwith.com
