Director's statement

In my journey as a filmmaker, I consider myself lucky to have crossed paths with the talented actress named Yvette Angulo, with whom I have closely collaborated on multiple projects. One day, while sharing personal experiences about the diverse communities we grew up in, the idea for “Our Barrio” was born. Together, we set out to write a film that could speak to our current political and social climate. We set out to create a film that could inspire and help unite not only our communities, but also those across the country as well. And we set out to give a voice to those who are vastly underrepresented in film. When female characters represent less than a third of speaking roles, and Latinas play only a small percentage of those female roles, we take enormous pride in our desire to advocate for more diverse storytelling.
