Mission Statement

I want to tell this story because I'm passionate about environmental activism and I believe films have great power to spark interest, inspire change and motivate for action. This is the kind of story I want to create. It is about reconnecting with nature, love and finding a place where one belongs.

The Story

Premise

The 2389: Coming Home follows two characters, a scientist named Fox and a soldier named Sola, the decedents of the first Mars colonizers. They come to Earth on a mission to learn if life is possible there after the ecosystems had been destroyed by previous generations.

They discover a pristine paradise with clean air and water, as nature has incredible regenerative abilities, but they also find the ruins of the previous civilization: almost fully ruined cities, landfills, and other sites where there is still no life, only toxic pollution. Fox understands that if the people from Mars come back to Earth, history will repeat itself and another environmental disaster will wipe out all life. They are just not ready yet.

Fox has to convince Sola not to share all of their findings and report that life on Earth is not possible yet. It is no easy task as Sola has already pictured her family's life here in the natural paradise as opposed to fully artificial life on Mars. She wants the best things for the fellow humans back on Mars. And, she as the captain of their spaceship is in control of all the communications. They will have to find the right solution upon which the future of Earth and of the human race depends.

Concept

2389: Coming Home is a sci-fi short film that explores the probable future of life on Earth in a scenario when climate change happens according to the worst of the scientific predictions and Earth becomes uninhabitable, humans must whether escape to a colony on Mars or stay on Earth to die. When the astronauts from the Martian colony come back to Earth centuries after the apocalypse, their findings pose a dilemma between preserving natural life on Earth or continuing to lead the consumeristic lifestyle, knowing what the consequences will be and repeating history.

The film utilizes nature’s ability to restore and thrive, as well as consequences of a major environmental crisis for humankind. It is an environmental tale, on a bigger scale the story highlights the possible consequences of the environmental crisis we are embarking on now, while on an individual level it explores the theme of finding a place of one’s belonging.

Story Background

Human-caused climate change had led to planetary collapse of civilization as we know it. With natural disasters intensifying, there had been massive waves of climate refugees which eventually turned into wars for territories and the remaining resources. Full-scale world war that had utilized atomic weapons had left the Earth uninhabitable. Only a few select people were able to escape to form a colony on Mars, led by military order and scientific research. The rest of the people were doomed to die. Many generations later, a scientist on Mars named Fox, convinced the command that they must go back to Earth and find out if it is livable once again.

Why Now?

We live during the time of climate change crisis and the actions of our generation will determine the future of all the next generations of the human race and the conditions they will live in. It is crucial to raise the awareness on the environmental issues right now and with this film we want to portrey a future of the humans in the scenario when our current generation does not solve the climate crisis and we hope that it will contribute to the environmental discussion and debate in the world now.

Inspiration

We all in the team are huge fans of sci-fi blockbusters like Martian, Interstellar, After Earth, I am legend and most recently - Dune. We take our inspiration for best practices in production design from them scaling it to a short film.

Production and Post-Production

We have already made significant progress in designing the world of the future, such as the astraunats' suits and their gear, as well as the overall cinematographic look and feel of the film.

We plan on shooting on location in the end of April 2022 for the main part of the shoot. It will be an outdoor forest location, which will not require an extensive set built, but provide a natural backdrop for the world of the future conveyed through high-tech props, set dressing and characters’ costumes.

We will complete our post-production in-house at Columbia College Chicago. Additionally, we partnered with a visual effects studio to create the VFX for the film.

Distribution

I plan on submitting the completed film to international film festivals with the focus on environmental topics and numerous sci-fi specialized ones. I have previous experience with some festivals with my first documentary short Plastic. It was screened at about a dozen festivals and is currently used at environmental education events.

Some of the festivals I want to submit the film to are International Films for the Earth Festival, Ecologico International Film Festival, Sustainable Development Film Festival, INKAFEST Mountain Film Festival, International Nature Film Festival Gödöllő, Green Film Fest, Environmental Film Festival in the Nation’s Capital, Climate Crisis Film Festival, Patagonia Eco Film Fest, Artivist Film Festival, Innsbruck Nature Film Festival, Green Screen Wildlife Film Festival.

After the festival circle I plan on getting the film distributed with some of the short film online streaming platforms and used by environemtal non-profits for educational and inspirational purposes.

Your support

I have been able to secure most of the needed budget for the film, through a few grants and personal funds. Now we need to get this last strech to secure the rest of the budget for the production stage and make sure we can shoot the film in the right location and with the right conditions to create the best possible outcome and therefore - the best audience experience. Help us make this a reality!

We are asking for your support now and inviting you to be a part of this fascinating journey of filmmaking with us, to stay connected and updated on all of the news of the production and be some of the first people who will get to see the film! Every contribution counts and is important and we have many ways of saying thank you, check out the incentives at each tier level.

Please, share this campaign with our friends and family! This kind of support doesn't cost anything but is just as important and impactful!
