Aging, crime, and death are nil in Kurt Vonnegut's 1962 sci-fi story, of which this short film is an adaptation. Edward K Wehling Jr.'s wife is giving birth to triplets, and he must find three suicide volunteers. Imagine that.

Mission Statement

2BR02B adapts a sci-fi short story from the 1960s. Themes include population control and suicide in a futuristic world. Our multi-ethnic and young 20s all-female crew is especially important in light of #MeToo. A confident lead female role will enable this film to draw commentary on topical issues.

The Story

Lucy Moroukian, director and writer, has adopted the concept for this film from science fiction short story "2 B R 0 2 B" by Kurt Vonnegut and published in early 1962 in If, an American sci-fi magazine.

Vonnegut's story introduces the audience to a world in which society is overpopulated and the United States' Federal Bureau of Termination (FBT) exists to aid suicide and infanticide in order to maintain population control. The system requires that a person must voluntarily die in order to enable another human to live, if born. In particular, the title references Shakespeare's famous phrase, although it is pronounced "2 B R naught 2 B," and simultaneously references the assisted suicide hotline dial code linked to the FBT within the context of this story.

We are introduced to characters in a Chicago hospital waiting room and tension is high.  One waiting room holds the fate of both an expectant father and the staff awaiting calls from those who have exhausted the delights of this earth and are ready to make way for the next generation.  Will the phone calls come before the babies arrive?

About This Team

DIRECTOR/WRITER

Lucy Moroukian was motivated to work in film through the encouragement of her mother, an English teacher, who instilled a deep respect for literature within her at a very young age. "2 B R 0 2 B" is a story that more people ought to see come to life through her lense. Her previous experience includes production coordination, assistant camera, script supervisor and more. A recent Project, First Girl I Loved, won best of NEXT at Sundance in 2016 and another, Bitch, was featured at Sundance's Midnight premieres in 2017.

DIRECTOR OF PHOTOGRAPHY

Rebekah Burrows has worked as a Director of Photography on many small projects and views her role on this short to be the perfect next step in her young career. Previously, she has worked in a variety of roles (assistant director, grip, assistant camera, director, and set design) while she finds her passion to live in the camera department.

PRODUCER

Nicole Hornbeck is a senior at Drexel, pursuing a major in Television Production and a minor in Legal Studies. Her experience varies by city and position. She has worked in Los Angeles for the Late Late Show with James Corden, New York City for Time, Inc.'s Video Production Department, and has also worked on several films in the Philadelphia area. This is her first time working on an all-female production and she is excited to provide new opportunities for women in her field.

PRODUCER

Laurel Yaros is in pursuit of an education that combines creative media, production, business and law and a professional background in acting, both screen and performance. Her past work in short-form production includes a senior thesis, The Blase EP, at Drexel University as well as Verizon's Go90.com Mr. Student Body President as a First-Team Production Assistant. She is most excited about launching this film from conceptualization to distribution because she has yet to work on an all-female crew and she has deep trust and respect for Director Lucy.
