9 Lives
Atlanta, Georgia | Film Short
Comedy, LGBTQ
9 Lives is a dark comedy that navigates our lowest and darkest thoughts through finding the meaning in the mundane, and beauty in the absurdity of it all. Their queerness isn’t the story, their humanity is. A pure and honest representation of queer youth; discovery, fear, and ultimately, acceptance.

The Story

Dark. Comedic. Follow the journey of Clara & June as they navigate a bizarre night together thanks to an unlikely hero: a dead cat named Beans.
Want to know more? Well I'll tell you more...
Our story begins and ends with Clara, a young woman struggling to find self assurance in a sea of rejection and failure. Now that might sound depressing but so is she. This is our wounded protagonist. She’s managing life (if you could even call it that) with self deprecating humor, unhealthy habits, and, what I think is her most valuable trait, a blind faith in the unknown. The perfect combination that leads one to drinking too much at a party, humiliating yourself, having a panic attack in the bathroom and then finally, meeting someone who sees your grief. Our new friend June has recently lost her best friend. Her cat named Beans. Through their shared grief they strike an unmistakable bond, which is sealed through the journey to have Bean’s burial. They must leave the party and go bury beans. But who will they run into? Where are they going? Can they trust each other? This story leaves you wanting more, not only because you’ll have questions, but because it touches on the deepest corners of our capacity to love, mourn, and the terrifying vulnerability that comes with it.
We are making this film because we believe in the words, characters, and our ability to capture the relatability of the shared experience that surrounds grief. There is a beautiful humor hidden in our moments of mourning and the absurdity of what we will do to move through it. This is a meaningful project to everyone involved and gives us a chance to create; the one thing we know we can do collectively to heal any wound no matter how small or large.
We plan to use this money to bring this film to fruition and make it known. Every dollar donated will be helping an independent artist in our cast and crew. Paying the people who are generously sparing their homes or stores for locations, making sure we all eat and have money for gas. Even during post production we will be using this funding to pay our editors, colorists, sound engineers, musicians, and fees for film festival submissions. Every dollar counts, and is deeply appreciated.
