Mission Statement

Through the unlikely friendship between a young woman and a robot, this short film highlights the power of connection and explores how technology can work to bring humans closer together, rather than divide us.

The Story

In an isolated future, Ruby (newly 25 and seriously lacking a social life) finds her routines disrupted when she makes an unlikely friend: a mail-order robot. Ruby is forced to learn lessons from her new robot friend: the power of opening up, the importance of platonic intimacy, and how to quell that anxious voice in the back of your head that wonders why anyone would want to be friends with you.

Conversations about AI and the role of technology in our society have never been more timely. We started developing this film during the height of the pandemic, as we were reflecting on isolation and the importance of human connection. We wanted to explore a future in which technology helps humans become better humans. We also wanted to challenge ourselves as filmmakers, to build a compelling futuristic world and an endearing CGI robot. Collectively, the team behind this project has produced seven award-winning short films and worked on theatre and film projects for Netflix, HBO Max, The Geffen Playhouse, Williamstown Theatre Festival, and more — and this is our most ambitious short film yet

The world of 2032 is rich with pastel colors, retro-futuristic technologies, and lots and lots of turtlenecks. This film is driven by rhythmic transitions and poignant moments of connection. Beans (the best friend you’ll ever assemble) comes to life on screen through creative character design and visual effects.

We finished principal photography in Fall 2022, and we've spent the past year editing the film and bringing Beans to life through character design, 3D modeling, and compositing. We are currently raising $8,000 to finance post-production. We'll use these funds to finish the lush visual effects that build out this futuristic world, to work with a composer and sound mixer to give this short a unique soundscape, and to bring this film to audiences through festival submissions, marketing, and distribution! Your support is instrumental in helping us take this short film across the finish line and into the theatre.

This film stars the incredible Midori Francis (Grey's Anatomy, Sex Lives of College Girls), with a talented and diverse supporting cast including Danielle Young, Adam Shapiro (Never Have I Ever), Miyuki Matsunaga, and Joaquina Gentil.
