Mission Statement

A Space for Beau captures a narrative of a troubling childhood and parental relationship through the lens of a transgender character, a story often overlooked in the industry. The film's embrace of relatable struggles of adulthood and connection to one's inner child tell a story of growth and love.

The Story

A Space for Beau begins with an anxiously anticipated arrival: Beau's terminally ill mother.

Beau, a man who finds stability in the self-sufficient success and constructed space he’s grown to identify with, chooses to take a critical step into manhood—caring for his mother despite their long-estranged relationship.

To prepare Beau's house for his mother's move-in is to prepare for his mother's witness of his own isolated prosperity. Safety-proofing the house seems like a simple feat—until a vastly different guest gets in the way: a young girl.

Through sessions with Oscar, Beau's eccentrically unconventional therapist, Beau is resistantly pushed to unpack the realities of the girl's disruptive presence. Beau, however, would rather confine his concerns towards his incoming mother's arrival.

When the child’s stay threatens the integrity of Beau’s home just days before his mother’s move, Beau must traverse a psychological journey toward bettering the relationships both around him and within himself, all within the space he once considered to define him.

The long process of coming up with a A Space for Beau arose from an interest in finding an identifiable way to tell a story of facing one's masked childhood in order to heal the self. As a transgender man, filmmaker, and storyteller, I have realized the need and creative power of telling such a story through a lens of a transgender protagonist, while embracing authenticity and nuance, something often lacking from films portraying the subject. I wanted this story to feel accessible, relatable, and emotional to audiences beyond those that LGBT films are often confined to…many could benefit from the hard work of healing their troubled childhood and embracing the young self that lives within them. I am here to tell a story of a man’s ability to reconnect with and understand his young self, and to expand it by exploring such healing through a mother and son's troubled, adult relationship. To create and nurture the space for one to face and reparent their own unhealed childhood, especially when one must take on a caretaking role for their own parent.

We have a goal of raising $7000 for the production expenses of A Space for Beau. While this may sound like a lot for a student film production, there are plenty of expenses that must be treated similarly to professional productions. Between locations, paying talent, feeding the cast and crew, and truck rentals to transport equipment, the real-world numbers add up fast. With this being a BFA Thesis film production, the project is approached with industry-standards and professionalism from the beginning of story development to the final touch of post-production, even to distribution and festival submissions. Any excess funding we get from crowdfunding will be used to help pay for film festival submissions, which are crucial for the final product to be seen by other creatives and for the team to be highlighted and potentially rewarded for their hard work.

There are a plethora of ways you can help.

  • Sharing this crowdfunding site with friends, family, and peers.
  • Following @aspaceforbeaufilm on Instagram for updates on the project.
  • Following our Seed&Spark campaign.
  • Pledging to our film with a monetary contribution--become a vital contributor to the final product!

We have to reach 80% of our goal in order to make this film. That means we must raise $5600.

Filmmaking is far from a one-person show. It takes time, money, labor (both creatively and physically), and most importantly—community. A Space for Beau is a film made for its respective communities, and importantly, made by its communities. As BFA film students with a passion for cinematic storytelling, the thesis film is a culmination and celebration of our hardest work. We are thrilled to execute commitment and creation to share a deeply emotional story to the big screen. Your contribution is the tool that fuels our ability to bring A Space for Beau to life. The project is thriving with dedicated students, professionals, and faculty to drive its process to completion, with a commitment to a professional production and product. Our team will maintain communication and updates to our Contributors regarding the film's status and process through production, post, and distribution.

Their favorite part about working in the art department is being able to include fine details throughout a scene to make the narrative extra meaningful. Because of their own queer identity, they feel very connected to this story and are so excited to design A Space for Beau.

Their work focuses on intentional lighting, composition, and camera movement. A Space For Beau is the perfect example of a story with a mix of different aesthetics and emotions which makes telling the story visually more challenging and interesting.

Being a young filmmaker from Jamaica, she strives to make work that would make her younger self proud of what she’s become in America. Coming from a background of tech-savvy family members that inspired her to take this path, she hopes to keep that dream going. Being a cinematographer helps her see the world in a different light, finding the visual beauty in things that are otherwise mundane.
