A Tour of the Universe Starring Earth & You began with a deceptively simple question: How can we possibly comprehend the scale of the universe—and our tiny, astonishing place within it?

My answer is not another conventional science documentary. I wanted to make a film that feels like a tour: part scientific journey, part visual poem, part essay, part comedy, and part existential provocation. And, yes, there is a bit of shtick along the way. The film's great reveal is that after traveling through billions of years and unimaginable distances, the tour eventually brings us back home—to Earth, and to you.

The film begins by looking outward, toward deep space: galaxies, stars, planets and the vastness of the cosmos. Then the direction changes. We travel backward through deep time, compressing billions of years of geological history into a scale our human minds can begin to grasp. Continents move. Mountains rise and disappear. Volcanoes erupt. Oceans change. Life emerges, evolves and persists.

And then the scale keeps getting smaller.

From Earth we move toward the microscopic world—cells, embryos, atoms and the extraordinary structures hidden inside what appears to be ordinary matter. Eventually, the cosmic and the personal collide: the universe is not merely something “out there.” We are made of it.

Visually, the film is deliberately eclectic. I bring together astronomical imagery, NASA material, telescope photography, geological and paleogeographic animation, volcanic eruptions, landscapes, microscopy, deep-sea life, an ultrasound image of a developing human, birth footage, animation, archival material and original filmmaking. Paintings by artists such as Frederick Edwin Church become part of the journey alongside scientific visualization and contemporary digital imagery.

Music is equally important. Rather than functioning merely as background, the approximately 21 musical cues help create the film's emotional architecture—moving between the monumental, the mysterious, the playful and the intimate. The soundtrack ranges from classical composers to contemporary artists and experimental music.

At the center of all of this is the human imagination. We cannot actually experience 13.8 billion years or comprehend the size of the observable universe. We need metaphors, stories, images, music and humor to get there.

That is what I am trying to make: a film about the universe that ultimately becomes a film about being alive.

And the title tells you where the journey ends:

Campaign Context: Help Me Finish the Journey

I’ve been making A Tour of the Universe Starring Earth & You because I’ve always been fascinated by the enormous story we’re all part of—and by the strange fact that, for a few moments in cosmic time, each of us gets to experience it.

The film is already substantially made. I’m not asking you to help me start a movie. I’m asking you to help me finish one.

The remaining work is the unglamorous but essential part of filmmaking: paying for the music and images that need to be cleared, finishing the last stages of post-production, mastering the film, and getting it ready to be shown.

Where your money goes

Music and image rights are the biggest immediate need. The film uses music and imagery from a wide range of sources, and I want to clear those rights properly rather than simply hope nobody notices.

Your contribution will also help pay for the final stages of:

• picture and sound finishing
• color correction and final mastering
• graphics and other remaining post-production
• festival submissions and required screening materials

In other words, the money goes on the screen—or toward getting the finished film onto a screen.

What happens next

My plan is straightforward.

Fall 2026: Raise the finishing funds and complete the remaining music and image clearances.

Late 2026: Finish post-production, sound, color, graphics and mastering.

Early 2027: Lock the completed film and prepare the festival submission and exhibition materials.

2027: Take the finished film to festivals and audiences, beginning with the festivals that are the best fit for its unusual combination of science, documentary, humor, music and experimentation.

I’m deliberately being transparent about where the film stands. There are no promises here that a particular festival will accept it, or that it will become something bigger than it is. What I can promise is that your contribution will help me get this film across the finish line and give it the best possible chance to find an audience.

I’ve spent years putting this strange little journey together. It starts with the Big Bang, travels through billions of years of cosmic and geological history, and eventually arrives at the person watching it.
