Our sci-fi short film, After Algos, is about an invention that is able to transfer pain from one person to another person. People who can afford to use this machine find themselves pain-free, but those who lack money suffer greatly. We aim to demonstrate to you the gap between the wealthy and poor.

Mission Statement

We, the After Algos team, are a diverse group of mostly student filmmakers who have come together to create the most unique sci-fi short film we can. In our film, an extreme example of economic inequality is depicted to show how many eerie similarities there are between our film and the real world.

The Story

Hello, and welcome to our short film, [AFTER ALGOS]!

[After Algos] tells the story of Dr. Richter, a half-crazy, half-genius young scientist whose invention has the ability to transfer pain from one person to another. Though his intentions are good, he is blinded by passion and he is imprisoned for unethical experimentation. While Richter languishes in prison, the Algos becomes a commercialized product, turning into a symbol of greed and class disparity. What begins as a project with a mission to bring relief to humanity quickly descends into madness. This film will leave viewers in disarray, questioning modern day society and the limits of human compassion.

Around the world, millions of people are protesting the increasingly growing wealth gap between the rich and the poor, and we am to bring that to light. The majority of us are college students, so juggling debt and trying to make ends meet is something that we constantly relate to. Using this, we've taken a deeper approach to what economic inequality can cause when combined with a bit of sci-fi.

Our team mainly consists of students at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, but we are a diverse cast of all ages. Currently, we are done shooting about 30-40% of our project, and are working towards filming some of the tougher and longer scenes from here on out. Also, with covid shutting down lots of possible locations and the chance of the crew catching covid still there, we are taking extra steps to make sure we don't deviate from our filming schedule. For example, some people are wearing masks and our team has agreed that if someone is feeling under the weather, they should not come to set regardless of what it might be. Safety comes first and we are committed to that.

Everyone involved is putting in an extraordinary amount of effort to make this film to be unlike any other student film. We’ve found a group of individuals that care and we hope others will find just as much meaning in it as we do. If you are able to lend your support, we thank you. But regardless…

We appreciate you taking the time to learn about [AFTER ALGOS].

About This Team

Baiwen Xu (徐柏文) (Director) - About four months ago, I came up with the question, “What would happen if a pain transferring machine existed?” Would it be beneficial? Or would it be another tool for people to exploit and overuse? Then we came up with a slightly darker script trying to “predict” what would happen if the pain-transferring machine, Algos, was invented.

I grew up in a megacity in China called Hangzhou. For years, I witnessed how fast a city could grow and the incredible speed of people moving in. One side was enormous economic miracles. Another side was inequality led by high housing prices caused by rapid changes. Like in "After Algos," people see inequality but behave differently. They cheer, they accept, and they riot. "After Algos" is not just a film about a machine; it’s about the humans behind it.

I started filmmaking before the pandemic and worked as a cinematographer/director in recent years. My first film participated was also a sci-fi film Orange Cube Project shot in Shanghai, China. After that, I started doing commercial work/music videos with talented musicians. Then I found myself digging into narrative film production after I moved to Champaign, IL. I shot different films involving drama, horror, sports, crime, experimental, etc.

I am excited to shoot this film with talented actors and filmmakers. After hundreds of hours on this project, we believe "After Algos" will provide a different perspective toward sci-fi film.

Rishi Patel (Scriptwriter & Executive Producer) - Hi! About four months ago, Baiwen needed someone to put together a sci-fi story that encompassed his vision and I fell in love with the idea. As Baiwen has said, we've turned the idea into something more than just about a machine. The humans behind the making of the machine, the owners of the machine, and those who use it make up the parts of the film that make it unique.

Personally, I'm an undergraduate at UIUC and originally from Northern California. I've also been a writer for quite some time but have slowly transitioned into writing scripts. This is the largest project I've done and I am very much looking forward to it's final release. I have also helped as a producer in other smaller films but this is the first large project that I've had the opportunity to be the producer on.

I can't wait to show everyone the final product and just how talented our crew is. Thank you all for the support!

Ranon Herman (Assistant Director, Composer, & Sound Designer) - Originally from Johns Creek, Georgia, I am currently finishing the thesis for my masters in music education at UIUC and have been teaching in Illinois since 2017, including in Chicago Public School (CPS) for three years. While working in CPS, the Marine Leadership Academy Band received straight superiors at competition under my direction.

From 2018 to 2020 I performed in several community music ensembles throughout Chicago including at DePaul University, Horner Park, and in several improv and musical improv shows at the IO Theater in Chicago. I also worked as the Assistant Director at Anshe Emet in Chicago for its Annual Youth Play in 2016. I won the IFV 48 hour film competition award for best Director and Best Film for the film The Witness. I also have a book of poetry published called an Ice Cube Down My Back and music on all streaming platforms under the artist name Ranonomous.

I was hesitant when Baiwen first asked me to be a part of the project, but when I saw his passion for the film I got behind him 100%. His passion has now become my passion and I am giving this film 110%. I really stand by themes of mental health in the film and hope it will bring a different and new awareness to the topic.
