The Story

I know what it means to chase “someday.” As a struggling artist, I’ve lived in the tension between passion and survival—waiting for the moment when making art no longer means sacrificing everything else. But waiting isn’t living. And that’s exactly why I need to tell this story now.
Our film, Airport BLVD is a jazz-infused, surrealist exploration of love, ambition, and the pursuit of "someday." Set against the backdrop of an ever-changing Austin, TX, this story follows Xavier, a dreamer caught between passion and passivity, love and loss, art and survival. Xavier, is a young Black man drifting through Austin, searching for purpose, connection, and the courage to take control of his life. Like Xavier, I moved to Austin for the wrong reasons. I wrestled with doubt, love, loss, and the guilt of passivity.
I used to believe that I was alone in that feeling and that it would never change, but in writing, casting, and directing this project, I've proved to myself that these feelings are not facts. But this story isn’t just mine—it belongs to every artist struggling to make sense of their place in a changing world. This story is shaped by the experiences of myself, and the many creatives who’ve offered their vulnerability to create this film. I hope this story can provide clarity to a generation of young adults struggling with the same uncertainties, finding fulfillment in something that helps us feel whole, and finding love, whether in a friendship, a life partner, or (most importantly) yourself.
Austin is evolving, and so is the creative landscape. That’s why Airport BLVD needs to be made today—not someday. With the soul of Medicine for Melancholy and the emotional vibrance of The Last Black Man in San Francisco, our film blends romance, music, and raw emotion into a cinematic journey for anyone who has ever chased a dream, questioned their path, or fallen in (or out of) love with a city.
We have completed the first act of our film. Production is underway, and we plan to wrap shooting in mid-April. This film is shot on the Arri Alexa Mini camera with an open-gate sensor, paired with vintage Japanese Mamiya prime spherical lenses. The framing will evoke vintage portrait style, reminiscent of 90s films like Love Jones and Sleepless in Seattle.
This is the right story. This is the right time. And I am the right person to tell it—because I’m living it. Thank you for your consideration in joining our journey to Airport BLVD.

Airport BLVD aims to resonate with a diverse audience, particularly those in the Black community of Austin who have been displaced and forced out of the Eastside as more “residential” developments pop up. In Austin, the story of gentrification can be best told on Airport BLVD, a street that stretches through central Austin and connects the Southeast to the Northwest. The city transforms along its path.
This story
explores the complex emotional landscapes and social themes of coming-of-age, the cultural isolation caused by gentrification, and the unpredictability of change. Our audience includes young adults, creatives, and viewers interested in narratives that challenge conventional perspectives on identity and relationships.

Xavier has spent his life drifting—drawn to Austin by a fleeting but magnetic encounter with a woman named Destiny. He hopes for a fresh start but quickly finds himself caught between belonging and isolation—inspired by the city’s creative energy, yet disconnected from it.

As he struggles to find his footing, he reconnects with Kenny, his childhood friend and Austin's best DJ, who is frustrated by his own stalled ambitions. Xavier, Destiny, and Kenny wrestle with the weight of responsibility, creative roadblocks, relationships, and the uncertainty of their futures.

Over the course of a year, their lives intersect against the backdrop of a rapidly changing Austin, smoky jazz lounges, and restless night drives, where love, loss, and ambition collide. Are they willing to stay and fight for the life they want, or will they walk away, letting the city—and each other—become just another stop along the way?

After a fleeting encounter with the enigmatic Destiny, Xavier impulsively moves to Austin. Full of quiet optimism, he soon finds himself both inspired by the city's creative pulse and disconnected from it, as he wrestles with identity, purpose, and the weight of his neglected past. Xavier reconnects with his childhood friend Kenny, whose grief threatens to pull them both under. As Xavier chases his artistic ambitions, he must also learn to hold on to love, friendship, and his identity. But when confronted with the reality of his shortcomings, Xavier is forced to ask himself: Is he ready to stay, confront himself, and rebuild what he's lost? Or will he continue to drift, allowing the city and the people who once defined his world to fade away?

Destiny is a forward-thinking bartender with an artist’s soul, stuck in a city that no longer inspires or accepts her. She’s restless, disconnected, and ready to leave as her dream of being a painter feels more like a distant fantasy than a tangible future. She’s convinced that self-discovery must come before love until she meets Xavier, who challenges her perspective and unsettles her certainty. With only a few fragile ties keeping her in Austin, Destiny stands at a crossroads. Does she take a leap, chase her artistic dreams elsewhere, and start fresh? Or is Xavier the reason to give this city—and herself—one last chance?

Kenny is a driven DJ, full of energy and ambition, but burnt out by the weight of unmet expectations. He’s desperate to make a name for himself, yet the dream is always out of reach. He imagines a better life in New York, but when it comes to jumping, he’s stuck—longing for change, but paralyzed by fear and excuses. The more he dreams of something bigger, the less he acts. His frustration builds, and when his childhood friend Xavier reappears, old grudges and unresolved tension put their friendship to the test. Can they reconcile their differences before Kenny walks away for good? Or will he bail on his past and his dreams?

Airport BLVD draws inspiration from a rich tapestry of films that blend introspection, romance, and the complexities of human connection. This film draws inspiration from films like Medicine For Melancholy, Frances Ha, and Paris Blues with the surrealist world-building of The Worst Person In The World to create a unique portrayal of the Black experience in contemporary America, exploring themes of love, longing, loneliness and the ephemeral nature of relationships through the sounds of jazz music.
Like Past Lives and A Tale of Winter, it explores the weight of time, memory, and missed opportunities. The film embraces the satirical sharpness of American Fiction while capturing the raw emotional intimacy of Celeste & Jesse Forever and Late August, Early September. Stylistically, it channels the poetic realism of If Beale Street Could Talk and some of the dreamlike, nonlinear storytelling of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. With a jazz-infused score and striking black-and-white cinematography, Airport BLVD weaves these influences into a uniquely Austin story—one of love, loss, and the ever-shifting pursuit of art in a changing city.
Reminiscent of The Last Black Man in San Francisco, Airport BLVD is a meditation on memory, belonging, and what it means to exist in a place that's always changing. Gentrification is not just about new buildings and rising rents—it is often a precursor to erasure. In Austin, that erasure has disproportionately affected Black communities, turning once-thriving neighborhoods into historical footnotes. Once home to a thriving Black population, Austin’s rapid development has priced out longtime residents, pushing them to the outskirts while replacing historically Black spaces with businesses and communities that cater to wealthier, often white, newcomers.
Decades of systemic displacement—redlining, urban renewal, highway expansions—laid the groundwork for a city that now struggles to retain its Black residents. Today, Austin’s Black population hovers below 8%, a number that continues to decline as the forces of gentrification push families, artists, and entrepreneurs to the margins.
There is a trend of Black Americans, drawn by Austin’s reputation as a hub of creativity and opportunity, arriving hopeful but often leaving within their first couple of years, citing cultural isolation and the absence of spaces that reflect their experiences. What does it mean to chase dreams in a place that may not see you? Xavier, our protagonist, grapples with this question as he watches his world transform before his eyes. His story is not unique—it is the story of countless Black Austinites who have watched their communities disappear, their histories rewritten, and their presence reduced to a statistic.
Xavier’s journey reflects the emotional weight of being a “fly in the milk," It's more than a feeling; it is a reality. It is walking into spaces where you are the only one who looks like you. It is seeing the landmarks of your childhood replaced by coffee shops and condos. Airport BLVD captures this experience with unflinching honesty, inviting audiences to witness not just one man’s journey, but the broader struggle of a people fighting to hold onto their place in a city that has left them behind—yet could not be what it is without them.

Jazz and love share two things: passion, and unpredictability. Just as the beat of a drum can’t predict the notes of a piano, love can’t predict the certainty of time. Our characters will find themselves in the throes of jazz performed live, scoring our protagonists' everyday lives while also underscoring the emotional weight of pivotal turning points. Jazz becomes surreal when we let go of our understanding of what it is and accept the possibilities of what can be. Jazz teaches us that love can be quite the same, but it also takes an equal leap of faith. The musical elements will be inspired by the great Spike Lee and Mo’Better Blues as we reimagine love to the sounds of jazz music.
Austin is known as the "Live Music Capital of the World," yet dozens of venues have shut down or relocated due to rising rents and gentrification, displacing the very artists who made the city’s music scene legendary. Jazz, once a vital part of Austin’s sound, has been pushed to the margins, struggling to survive in an industry that favors mass appeal over cultural preservation. Airport BLVD captures this fading legacy through its jazz-scored narrative—a tribute to an art form, a city, and a creative spirit at risk of disappearing. If venues close, musicians leave, and history fades, can Austin still retain its title?

Airport BLVD is more than just a film; it’s a rare opportunity to support independent filmmaking, Black stories that matter, and uplift voices that too often go unheard. In a city like Austin, where rapid changes and gentrification are erasing the identities and histories of its communities, this film stands as a powerful reflection of that shift—the challenges, beauty, and struggle of finding your place in a world that feels constantly in flux. This is an opportunity to champion Black creatives and to provide a platform for our stories and perspectives.
The characters of Airport BLVD navigate the same questions that many of us face: How do we preserve who we are as everything around us changes? How do we reconcile dreams with the realities of responsibility? And, in the midst of it all, how do we hold onto the connections that make us feel alive?
The cast and crew of Airport BLVD are pouring their passion into this film, not just as a story, but as a movement—to bring Austinites together, to reclaim space for artists, and revitalize jazz as a vital part of the city’s cultural heartbeat.
This film is for everyone who has ever struggled to hold onto home in a city that’s changing before their eyes. It’s for those who feel the weight of rising costs, those who see themselves in Xavier's, Destiny's, and Kenny's journies, and those who simply love Austin for all it was and all it can still be. this is a universal story, made for anyone who has ever faced the uncertainty of change and fought to hold on to their sense of self.
