The story of exes Rose and Cole captures the beautifully tragic fact of life that not everyone we love is meant to stay forever. Reunited by a mutual friend’s New Year’s house party, a moment alone triggers memories as they seek closure not just for their relationship, but also losing a best friend.

Mission Statement

All the Time explores the beauty of impermanence — how ephemeral connections can leave everlasting impacts. Our team of USC filmmakers hopes this film offers a cathartic, empathetic space to grieve, reflect, and find the strength to appreciate those who leave pieces of themselves behind within us.

The Story

A word from our writer/director:

Grieving someone who’s still alive is a singularly heartbreaking experience. Someone who used to mean everything to me now exists as a completely different version of themselves – one I will never know. Suddenly, this person who knew my soul inside and out is just a stranger.

I wrote this script as a way to receive closure for that grief, to process my own heartbreak for all the people I’ve lost to time and circumstance. Because after the heartache subsides, I find myself left with just painful memories. But I realized, those experiences made me the person I am today. I hope this film leaves you with that understanding. That there are people in our lives who can help us become the person we’re meant to be, and we can be grateful for them, even if they were never supposed to stay with us forever.

All the Time is an intimate and bittersweet romance/drama short film that focuses on the inevitable grief of having to leave and having to be left. It's an honest portrayal of the end of relationships and the difficult ways nostalgia influences our journeys of saying goodbye and moving on. Letting go is terrifying, especially in a time as volatile as college – but through this film, we hope to portray the emotional release and clarity that can come from life’s most challenging transitions.

Our logline: Rose and Cole, two former lovers, reunite at a New Year’s house party, navigating the ghosts of their past relationship; as unspoken emotions resurface, they grapple with who they once were, who they’ve become, and the bittersweet reality of moving on.

We open our film on a college house party celebrating New Year’s, an end to an era and a beginning all in one. Amidst the chaos, we meet Rose and Cole. We feel it, they feel it: there is an invisible tension drawing their attention to each other that they simply cannot avoid.

After the celebration ends and the partygoers disperse, the two find themselves leaving together at the same time. Suddenly, for the first time since their breakup two years ago, Rose and Cole are alone. To break the silence, small talk about their new lives ensues with clear signs that something underlying needs to be said. Finally, Rose musters the courage to ask:

“Did you miss me?”

From here, the film begins to cut in vignettes, moments, memories. They are from the life Rose and Cole used to share together. Our hearts ache as these scenes show how they grew together, how their self-images improved in each other’s presence, and how they learned to deeply care for others through the love they shared.

As these memories pass through, Rose and Cole get more off their chest. Rose is able to confront Cole on why their relationship ended. Cole is able to express how grateful he is for her and ease Rose’s worries about the future.

When Cole realizes it’s time for him to leave, Rose finds herself alone again. Then – she lets go, and cries. All at once, Rose is struck by the poignant reality that this chapter in her life, this person whom she loved, is finally gone.

At the heart of every love story are its characters. Let’s meet the former couple:

ROSE (21): Melancholic. Guarded. Anxious. Rose carries herself with a quiet confidence that masks an undercurrent of vulnerability. She thought she’d moved on from the breakup but talking with Cole again after so long makes her emotions resurface in a way she didn’t anticipate. She longs for closure, as her journey is about making peace with fully moving on.

COLE (21): Contemplative. Taciturn. Earnest. Cole has a deeply introspective and empathetic nature, often trying to make sense of his own feelings. He is haunted by the emotional complexities of his past relationship with Rose, carrying a weight of guilt over breaking up with her. He wants Rose to understand his sincerity and point of view, while fully reconciling with his past decisions.

Countless people can resonate with the pivotal experiences of grieving and letting go of lost connections – how beautiful and tragic it is to grow because of and apart from people through the constantly changing social landscape of young adulthood. This film is about honoring the people who shape our future, even if they don’t stay. We believe in the honesty and vulnerability of our perspective and would absolutely love to include you on our journey!

Bringing our vision to life will only be possible through your support. With a fundraising goal of $3,000, every cent goes towards a valuable aspect of our production, especially supporting the safety of our cast and crew. As college students preparing to graduate, leaving people and places behind in our journeys is inevitable and extremely scary. But by making a film that sheds light on this fear, we hope to also depict the deep, necessary catharsis that comes with growing up and moving forward.

We have 30 days to get the word out and fund this heartfelt film, so we appreciate everyone who can donate, share our campaign with friends and family, and engage with our social media community. The time is officially counting down!

Our team is a tightly-knit collective of talented student filmmakers that trust in the generosity of potential donors like you who can help bring this project to life. The stories we tell as artists are profoundly intertwined with our personal experiences each team member on our crew has inserted a vulnerable piece of themselves into this project, and we hope this vulnerability is amplified through your belief in All the Time.
