Hi! This is Jacinta, the filmmaker behind this project. I'm a birth photographer, videographer and doula. I'm originally from Argentina, but I live in the US since 2017 with my husband and my 3 kiddos. Needless to say, I'm passionate about all things birth and I found my mission in life it's to normalize birth and break the paradigms around it.
Since the medicalization of birth, there's been a huge decline in maternal health and that needs to change.
When I crossed paths with Kristine, I was struck by her knowledge and charisma. So one random day, I told her I wanted to make a documentary about her. And she said "Sure!". So here we are.
The reason behind this project it's personal and global. I'm tired of seeing the injustice in the birth world, I'm sick of hospitals putting profit and liability before the mothers' and babies' wellbeing. I think the world needs to see that midwives can bring a different approach to what we think we know about birth.
We need to raise 80% of the money in order to keep the funds, so your help is extremely important.
The funds will be used mostly to pay for the costs of traveling around the world, lodging and eating. Occasionally, we'll need to hire extra hands for different purposes and at different stages of the process. Also, we're trying to license a very important song for this film, which will cost a lot of money, unless we can get to the artist and they allow (pun intended) to use it for free.
So what if we said you could have triplets vaginally or even at home, despite doctors telling you you're not allowed to?
"Allowed to birth: The journey of a Global Midwife" showcases the life, mission and work of Midwife Kristine Lauria. watch her journey through midwifery practice without a license, her commitment to normalize birth in all of its forms, her work as part of Doctors Without Borders in the most remote places in the world, and her personal life and birth experience.
You'll hear different stories of people whose births were stolen, just because the provider wasn't trained or aligned with the way things presented. You'll follow couples in their journeys to becoming families. You'll see the diversity in the people and the similarities in their births.
This documentary will open your eyes to a new way of seeing birth.
This is the moment, right now. We need to make this message heard. We can't keep losing our human nature and capacity to give birth without being allowed by someone else. This is the time we start changing the world, one birth at a time.
Kristine is an outstanding human being who continues to work hard for women and babies, and keeps a passion and vocation that is rare these days.
She teaches different types of birth, like breech and multiples, all over the world. She teaches to Obstetricians and physicians that have attended medical school for many years but never really learned birth as a normal, natural process.
Her personal story is as interesting as her professional journey. From having herself a free birth in 2000, to being part of Doctors without borders in remote places and refugee camps, her journey is almost unbelievable.
"Allowed to birth: the journey of a global midwife" will showcase stories from different families and their birthing experience, wether it's a hospital birth under the care of an obstetrician, or a triplet birth at home. Each story is worth documenting and sharing, as each child that is born is unique.
Join us on this journey to break the borders and boundaries regarding birth. We were born for this and because of that, we will always be allowed to birth.
