Why can't we just be happy with what we have? Alice and Charlotte are friends for life, but when something unexplainable comes between them they must remember what's important. Amazing Grace is a dark comedy that examines why we are always searching for something more, even when we have everything.

Mission Statement

When the unknown appears, we can cling to the absurd. As young women entering adulthood, we are fascinated by how our 20s can bring out emotions that even our best friends can't understand. Through a comedic lens, this film will show these acts of internal stress and how they play out.

The Story

Do you ever get so bored you start making up scenarios in your head? I sometimes find myself silently planning conversations that will never happen….while making the facial expressions to go along with it. I check myself before someone catches me. It's a moment to control. We are all searching for a sense of comfort.

The main inspiration for this short comes from films examining characters who are grasping at the absurd to make an often boring life seem worth living...

I wanted to look at these dramatic narratives that play with obscure beauty and solace in world-building and connect the audience to the screen in a really special way but bring it into a more relatable and digestible space. Rather than fixating on these depressive and often quite dark moments, I want to juxtapose them with a more light-hearted, natural angle because, to me, that is what being in your 20s is all about.

Although entering adulthood is filled with uncertainty and the desire to change, it is also incredibly goofy and chaotic. My characters know this and are exactly that. I don’t want them to feel bad about it, no one should, it is just a part of the journey of growing up.

Set in Brooklyn, New York, the film follows two girls and lifelong friends, Alice and Charlotte, after Alice’s grandmother funeral. We watch them navigate this morbid dose of reality in embarrassing - but all too familiar - ways and come to realize how sometimes all you can be is a little crazy.

CHARLOTTE is a stubborn blonde who is fueled by the external pressure of being an individual.

ALICE is naive to the extremities of the world and yearns for a deeper sense of comfort.

After Charlotte sings 'Amazing Grace' at Alice's grandmother's funeral, the lyrics corse through her veins and connect with her in a new, exciting way. With this newfound connection to life through death, she begins to subconsciously become Granny, herself. Her physicalities, mannerisms, and attitude become something that even Alice, her best friend, can't recognize... Charlotte comes obsessed with the idea of being old and full of a life already lived all the while leaving behind the person who has been with her through it all.

We are really excited to be working together on something we are all passionate about and can relate to. As friends and young women in our 20s, making this film allows us to tell a story of the little things that unite us, even when we don’t want to admit these similarities. It is important for us to keep the integrity of telling a coming-of-age story while also bringing in an edge that can sometimes feel jarring, but exists within all of us.

We are an independent short film and with your help, can establish a base of working that is sustainable and desirable for our team and community. That being said, we have a working goal of raising $5,000 for the production of this project. Your contributions will allow us to maintain a strong, well-run set with highly-capable and trusted creatives working in every corner. It is so special to get to work with such passionate young people and we want to be able to treat everyone right and have them coming back.
