THE STORY
Jacob (Scott Monahan) and John (Dakota Loesch) are two low-level Florida drug hustlers with a busted Crown Victoria and a dream. Driving a trunk full of opioids stuffed inside Teddy Bears towards Anchorage, Alaska, their plan is to cash-in big in the Land of Gold.
That plan gets challenged by their surroundings, their shortcomings, and their tendency to dip into their own supply. A split-second act of violence somewhere in the California desert derails their trip and sets the brothers on a crash course with tragedy.
This film isn’t a glorification of drugs but it isn't a demonization of drug users either. This isn’t a happy-go-lucky journey to the promised land; this is a journey to the heart of a family, the heart of addiction, and the heart of America.
The opioid epidemic has affected millions of Americans but is largely undiscussed in mainstream media. The filmmakers behind ANCHORAGE, their family and friends, have had firsthand experience with this crisis. This film is their way of addressing the issue and starting a long-overdue conversation.
THE TONE
The tone of Anchorage is like the desert itself: long contemplative stretches, a sense of decay, and then then the darkness creeps in. Jacob and John hop from an abandoned Air Force Base to a ghost town, from a once-was baseball field to a boarded-up mining site, decrepit structures dying in the middle of nowhere.
Working closely with our cinematographer Erin Naifeh we developed a visual language and stylistic approach for the filming of the movie. Our intention was to make you, as the audience, feel like you were stuck in the car with Jacob and John.
By using a 'curious camera' approach to filming every scene of the movie we were able to capture the small intimate moments and the textures of their surroundings that became the heart and soul of our story.
WHY WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT
We have taken the ride this far and now we need your help to raise the funds to finish this film. But not just finish it. We want to make the best damn movie we possibly can. With your support, we will be able to get through the expensive process of post-production, editing, sound design, composing, coloring, festival submission fees, and screenings. Each aspect of post-production can get very pricey when dealing with a feature-length film, that's why every single contribution counts.
- Music Composer - They create an original score for the film.
- Sound Designer - They mix and master all the dialogue, music, and sound effects for the film.
- Editor - They edit together every scene to create the final version of the film.
- Color Correction - This process ensures that the visuals are of the highest quality.
- Music Rights & Licensing - This gives us the rights to use the songs we want in the film.
- Festival Submission Fees - These are the costs for entering the film into festivals nationally and internationally.
APPROACH
The creators Scott Monahan and Dakota Loesch met in the Los Angeles immersive theatre scene in their first collaboration together with Ceaseless Fun Productions. Since then they have worked together on five immersive shows and are regulars in the Los Angeles immersive scene. They spent the better part of a year developing this script together using the techniques and practices they had been honing with collaboratively devised theater and bringing it into the filmmaking process.
Associate director Meredith Treinen (Grief, Re-Lease, Ceaseless Fun Producer) rehearsed with the cast to find how these characters moved, spoke, and thought. Every cast member in this film is an immersive heavy hitter, and the crew is made up of creators, performers, and lovers of this medium as well.
Immersive wasn't just part of the development process, it's also going to be a continued element of this film. While in the post-production phase the creators will be launching Anchorage: The Immersive Experience which will bring three audience members into the back seat of the Crown Victoria with Jacob and John. See the incentives for early access tickets to the show.
DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT
Legend goes something like this: buy an oxycodone pill in Florida for $1 a pop at a pill mill and sell it in another state for $15, $20, or even $25. But If you could drive it all the way to Anchorage, Alaska? You could sell it for $50, $100, even $250 per pill. Sounds crazy right? Ask any drug runner and they'll tell you the name of someone that tried it. Since most people don’t know any drug runners, you’ll just have to take my word for it... but don’t tell anyone you heard it from me.
Both Dakota Loesch and I have been personally affected by the opioid crisis. The same is true of so many of our family and friends, co-workers, and neighbors. Here lies the current problem: pharmaceutical companies are destroying America by preying on Americans. Opioids are tearing apart families, killing people of all ages, and the doctors are prescribing more and more and getting bonuses because of it.
Opioids are terrible. You can get hooked by swallowing a pill, but if you start snorting it or (even worse) smoking it, the addiction locks you in so fast that there isn’t a thing you can do about it. In 2010 alone, 85% of the nation's Oxycodone was prescribed in the state of Florida. 85%. I've heard stories of kids stealing them from their grandma who was ninety-two pounds soaking wet and prescribed one-hundred 120mg Oxys per month. That's enough to kill a mule.
The story of ANCHORAGE is a story about two brothers from Florida who were born into poverty, started their drug addiction young via prescribed medications, then graduated to opioids, and it all went downhill from there.
This is our story representing how this drug tears apart even the closest bonds of friendship and family. It's a film about how this nation of hustle and money and capitalistic greed leaves destruction in its wake. This is about toxic representations of masculinity within brotherhood and the violence within the world of men. And this story is just a teardrop in the ocean of stories of those affected by this drug. It’s a way for us to process what is happening to the people closest to us and to start a long-overdue conversation with the world.
We wrote this film because it's extremely personal to us, and a world that we both knew all too well. For many months we worked side by side getting this to a place where we could bring in the rest of the cast and crew. What surprises me to this day is how many people we shared it with had stories of their own, and were also affected by this crisis. We even ran into people while filming on location that would share their own experiences with this opioid epidemic and how it impacted their lives.
Thanks for taking the ride with us. Couldn't do it without you. We'll see you in Anchorage.

Recently, I’ve started to Direct and DP my own projects. Being a cinematographer is not just about creating beautiful images.
