Who says magical realism isn’t life already? Our film is shaping up to be just that. Imagine nature documentary vibes mixed with wondrous storytelling.

Why this film?
It's not just about defending cultural practices that have existed for time immemorial.
It's fire as protection.
It's to integrate wisdom from our elders.
It's to recall living legends in our culture.
It's about responsible technology for climate-conscious land management.
It's to create something we can all benefit from.
It's to live well.

Why make this film now?
Blanket fire suppression policies have proven to be deadly and detrimental to many ecosystems and the very people managing them ie. California on Turtle Island and Australia. This year in Sicily the law changed so that anyone caught culturally burning their land will lose their financial support from the government. Post covid the Italian government offered many different 'contributi' that were extensively applied for since they help with activities in agriculture, tourism, and construction. The fear of losing these and pushing back the date when people are allowed to burn has disrupted seasonal forage and cover crop seed sowing. People have resorted to expensive machinery methods to clean up or even worse, burning and leaving fires unattended.

The fire departments in Sicily are very understaffed. In response, people have been forced to resource themselves to fight fires. The intensity of the wildfires coupled with a lack of awareness of the benefits of cultural burning that actually prevent wildfires, is contributing to giving fire a bad reputation in the media. As well as, laying the path for a more dangerous future.

In response, we have already begun production and documenting the expressions and lived realities of shepherds, contadini, scientists, firefighters, dancers, weavers, grassroots aid initiatives, plants, policy changers, Indigenous Peoples of California, singers, animals, and soil to take you through the seasons as we uncover a clear path to how the dreaded fire season, can become fire celebration.

So, why us?
We, Alessia and Lucia, formed our friendship through the strenuous and thankfully funny task of teaching Lucia how to drive stick shift. Imagine transitioning from bumpy and windy dirt roads to the tight streets of a hilltop town. When it got a little more calm in the car (lol) we were able to share our love for the land here and get curious about how things were, how they are... how they could be. We're devoted to Sicily, we love sharing stories, and we feel we can contribute to the land history of these times beneficially. So naturally... why not make a film? Our combined experience in farming, theatre, and content creation gives us a solid base along with professional mentorship from Giuseppe. (Check out the team tab for more details about us)

This is all happening through 2024 as Lucia (our apprenticing filmmaker) volunteers with locals and interviews key contributors willing to talk fire in California, Southern Italy, and Portugal. Taking it as slow or fast as it needs to be. Our budget of $11,000 is fantastically small for the scale of a year-long production. We make sure to be resourceful and challenge the idea that in order to make a documentary you need a huge amount of money. We are shooting everything on an iPhone 13 mini and doing work exchange as we travel to actually be part of, not just an observer of, the lives of everyone we meet.
Whether you live in an urban or rural environment, the effects of wildfires can be very taxing to our well-being. We're tired of it and the fear-mongering news around the climate crisis. Yes, it’s serious and we're here to deliver the good news and the rich wisdom supporting how we can get back in balance with Earth.

Chi dice che il realismo magico non sia già la vita stessa? Il nostro film si preannuncia essere proprio questo. Immaginate le atmosfere di un documentario sulla natura mescolate con una narrazione meravigliosa.
Non si tratta solo di difendere le pratiche culturali che esistono da tempo immemore
È il fuoco come protezione
È per integrare la saggezza dai nostri antenati.
È per richiamare leggende viventi nella nostra cultura.
È per creare qualcosa da cui tutti possiamo trarne beneficio.
È per vivere bene.
Le politiche generali per la soppressione degli incendi hanno dimostrato di essere mortali e dannose per molti ecosistemi e per le persone che li gestiscono. Es In California in Turtle Island e in Australia. Quest'anno in Sicilia la legge è cambiata per cui chiunque venisse trovato a vruscari la propria terra avrebbe perso i finanziamenti dal governo (integrazione). Dopo il covid, il governo italiano ha offerto molti diversi contributi che sono stati ampiamente richiesti nell'agricoltura, nel turismo e nelle costruzioni.
La paura di perdere questi finanziamenti e il posticipare la data che permette di vruscari ha distrutto il raccolto stagionale e la semina per il foraggio degli animali e delle piante che nutrono la terra. Le persone hanno fatto ricorso all’utilizzo di costosi macchinari per pulire le terre o anche peggio dare fuoco e lasciarlo incustodito.
I vigili del fuoco in Sicilia sono a corto di personale. In risposta a questo, la gente ha dovuto affrontare e spegnere gli incendi per conto proprio. Tutto questo, assieme alla poca connessione e comunicazione con la vita delle campagne e ad un elevato tasso di turismo, ha contribuito a dare al fuoco una brutta reputazione e ad incrementare, gli già presenti, incendi.
Abbiamo già iniziato a produrre e a documentare il modo di vedere e vivere le proprie realtà di pastori, contadini, scienziati, vigili del fuoco, danzatori, tessitori, iniziative della gente comune, piante, politici, popolazioni Indigene della California, cantanti, animali e il suolo per accompagnarvi attraverso le stagioni mentre scopriamo un percorso chiaro su come la temuta stagione degli incendi può diventare una celebrazione del fuoco.
Quindi, perchè noi? Noi, Alessia e Lucia, abbiamo formato la nostra amicizia attraverso il, non facile e per fortuna divertente, compito di insegnare a Lucia come guidare un auto con il cambio manuale. Immaginate passare da strade sporche, piene di buche e curve alle strade strette di un paese in collina. Quando la situazione è diventata un po` più tranquilla in macchina (lol) abbiamo iniziato a raccontarci e a condividere il nostro amore per la terra qui e ad incuriosirci su come andassero le cose prima, come vanno adesso...e come potrebbero andare. Siamo devote alla Sicilia, ci piace condividere storie, e sentiamo che possiamo contribuire alla storia di questa terra in modo proficuo. Quindi naturalmente...perchè non fare un film? Le nostre esperienze in agricoltura, teatro e nella creazione di contenuti, ci permettono di avere una base solida assieme alla professionalità del nostro mentore Giuseppe. Tutto questo accadrà nel 2024 quando Lucia (la nostra apprendista regista) farà volontariato con la gente locale e intervisterà i diretti interessati disposti a parlare del fuoco in California, Sud Italia e Portogallo. Lasciando che il tempo ci guidi, velocemente o lentamente che sia. Sostienici e potrai unirti a lei nel suo viaggio su Substack dove non solo si parlerà di fuoco ma ti sarà data la possibilità di avere uno sguardo diretto e sincero all’interno delle realtà e degli spazi dove lei si muoverà. Il nostro budget di $11.000 è straordinariamente piccolo per una produzione lunga un anno perché proveremo a fare il possibile con la nostra rete e a sfidare l’idea che per fare un documentario serve necessariamente una grande quantità di denaro. Stiamo riprendendo tutto con un iPhone 13 mini e stiamo facendo degli scambi lavorativi così da viaggiare per essere veramente parte, e non solo esterne osservatrici, delle vite di chiunque incontreremo.
Ovunque tu viva, in un ambiente urbano o rurale, gli effetti degli incendi possono essere disastrosi per il nostro benessere. Siamo stanche di questa situazione e delle notizie allarmanti sulla crisi climatica. Sì, è una cosa seria e noi siamo qui per trasmettere le buone notizie e la profonda saggezza affinché possa essere da sostegno per tornare in equilibrio con la Terra.

About This Team

Alessia Siragusa
Our narrator and translator, Alessia is a 24-year-old Sicilian who has always lived in her small village Valledolmo in the islands center, surrounded by wheat fields and sheep. The area's economy consists mostly of agriculture and craftsmanship. She enjoys acting and doing theatrical workshops or anything that involves movies. She feels grateful to share her knowledge through this film, as well as happy to work with and learn from Lucia and Giuseppe.
Lucia Mauro
Lucia is an apprenticing director/producer/editor. A semi-first generation Sicilian-American raised in occupied Kizh territory on Turtle Island (Whittier, California), making this film is the culmination of everything she loves; visual art, culture, and Earth. Lucia has been studying ecology for the past 10 years and actively farming/gardening for the past 6. This past year she was the gardener in residence at Anna Tasca Lanza cooking school in Vallelunga, Sicily where she co-managed the heritage garden focusing on plants traditionally used for medicine and crafting. Not coincidentally, the same plants helped her get through a sickness that resulted from burn-out farming and, on the same piece of land her ancestors once sharecropped. To give insight into the delicate and rough ways of how this land is evolving with its people is a dream for Lucia. Big shoutout and appreciation to all the guidance and support she's been receiving along the way!
Giuseppe Sangiorgi
A Sicilian actor, writer, director, and teacher with over 20 years of experience in the Italian entertainment industry. He trained at the Teates Theater School in Palermo; he works as a theater actor with Antonio Latella, Isabella Ragonese, Marco Baliani, Vincenzo Pirrotta, Giorgio Barberio Corsetti, Emma Dante, and Massimo Verdastro, with whom he also collaborates as assistant director and choreographer. He works as a dancer
with the Abbondanza / Bertoni Company, Jacqueline Bulnes (soloist of the M. Graham Company) and Alessandra Fazzino. He writes and directs the shows Studio for Double Bass, based on P. Suskin and Sweet Transvestites, by W. Shakespeare. Always in the theater, he leads educational projects for theater schools, professional companies, and theater workshops. Among the most important experiences of his film acting career are: Febbre da fieno (Hay fever) of Laura Luchetti, La mafia uccide solo d'estate (The mafia kills only in summer) by PIF, Nuovomondo (The golden door) by Emanuele Crialese, La Stranezza (The strangeness) by Roberto Andò. In 2020 he made a documentary and a photographic exhibition
dedicated to the history of Valledolmo entitled Maravigghia. He has written and directed two short films: All this was once oaks, and Recomaterna, hosted in some national and international festivals.

La nostra narratrice e traduttrice Alessia è una 24enne Siciliana che vive a Valledolmo, Sicilia che ha sempre vissuto nel suo piccolo paesino, Valledolmo, nel centro della Sicilia, circondato da campi di grano e pecore. L’economia della sua zona è basata soprattutto sull’agricoltura e l’artigianato. Le piace recitare e fare laboratori teatrali e qualsiasi cosa che abbia a che fare col cinema/films. Si sente molto grata di condividere la sua conoscenza attraverso questo film e anche molto felice di lavorare e apprendere da Lucia e Giuseppe.
Lucia Mauro
Lucia è un’apprendista regista/produttrice/editrice. Una semi-prima generazione di Siciliana-Americana cresciuta nel territorio occupato di Kizh su Turtle Island (Whittier, California), la creazione di questo film è la sintesi di tutto quello che lei ama; l’arte visiva, la cultura e la Terra. Lucia ha studiato ecologia durante gli ultimi 10 anni e ha lavorato attivamente nell’agricoltura e giardinaggio negli ultimi 6. Quest’anno passato è stata la giardiniera nella scuola di cucina Anna Tasca Lanza a Vallelunga, Sicilia dove ha co-gestito il giardino storico concentrandosi sulle piante tradizionalmente utilizzate per la medicina e l'artigianato. Non a caso, le stesse piante l’hanno aiutata a guarire da una malattia derivante da un burn-out dell’agricoltura e sullo stesso terreno dove un tempo i suoi antenati lavoravano come mezzadri. Dare un’idea di come, delicatamente e aspramente, questa terra si sta evolvendo è un sogno per Lucia. Un grande ringraziamento e apprezzamento per tutta la guida e il supporto che ha ricevuto lungo il percorso!
Giuseppe Sangiorgi
Attore, scrittore, regista e insegnante siciliano con oltre 20 anni di esperienza nel settore dello spettacolo italiano. Si forma alla Scuola Teatrale Teates di Palermo; lavora come attore teatrale con Antonio Latella, Isabella Ragonese, Marco Baliani, Vincenzo Pirrotta, Giorgio Barberio Corsetti, Emma Dante e Massimo Verdastro, con il quale collabora anche come assistente alla regia e coreografo. Lavora come ballerino con la Compagnia Abbondanza/Bertoni, Jacqueline Bulnes (solista della Compagnia M. Graham) e Alessandra Fazzino. Scrive e dirige gli spettacoli Studio for Double Bass, tratti da P. Suskin e Sweet Transvestites, di W. Shakespeare. Sempre in teatro, conduce progetti didattici per scuole di teatro, compagnie professionali e laboratori teatrali. Tra le esperienze più importanti della sua carriera di attore cinematografico ricordiamo: Febbre da fieno di Laura Luchetti, La mafia uccide solo d'estate di PIF, Nuovomondo di Emanuele Crialese , La Stranezza di Roberto Andò. Nel 2020 ha realizzato un documentario e una mostra fotografica dedicati alla storia di Valledolmo dal titolo Maravigghia. Ha scritto e diretto due cortometraggi: Tutto questo una volta erano querce ( All this once were oaks), e Recomaterna, ospitato in alcuni festival nazionali e internazionali.

Tutto questo accadrà nel 2024 quando Lucia (la nostra apprendista regista) farà volontariato con la gente locale e intervisterà i diretti interessati disposti a parlare del fuoco in California, Sud Italia e Portogallo. Lasciando che il tempo ci guidi, velocemente o lentamente che sia. Sostienici e potrai unirti a lei nel suo viaggio su Substack dove non solo si parlerà di fuoco ma ti sarà data la possibilità di avere uno sguardo diretto e sincero all’interno delle realtà e degli spazi dove lei si muoverà. E anche delle piccole sorprese!
Il nostro budget di $11.000 è straordinariamente piccolo per una produzione lunga un anno perché proveremo a fare il possibile con la nostra rete e a sfidare l’idea che per fare un documentario serve necessariamente una grande quantità di denaro. Stiamo riprendendo tutto con un iPhone 13 mini e stiamo facendo degli scambi lavorativi così da viaggiare per essere veramente parte, e non solo esterne osservatrici, delle vite di chiunque incontreremo.
Ovunque tu viva, in un ambiente urbano o rurale, gli effetti degli incendi possono essere disastrosi per il nostro benessere. Siamo stanche di questa situazione e delle notizie allarmanti sulla crisi climatica. Sì, è una cosa seria e noi siamo qui per trasmettere le buone notizie e la profonda saggezza affinché possa essere da sostegno per tornare in equilibrio con la Terra.

Alessia Siragusa
Our narrator and translator, Alessia is a 24-year-old Sicilian who has always lived in her small village Valledolmo in the islands center, surrounded by wheat fields and sheep. The area's economy consists mostly of agriculture and craftsmanship. She enjoys acting and doing theatrical workshops or anything that involves movies. She feels grateful to share her knowledge through this film, as well as happy to work with and learn from Lucia and Giuseppe.
Lucia Mauro
Lucia is an apprenticing director/producer/editor. A semi-first generation Sicilian-American raised in occupied Kizh territory on Turtle Island (Whittier, California), making this film is the culmination of everything she loves; visual art, culture, and Earth. Lucia has been studying ecology for the past 10 years and actively farming/gardening for the past 6. This past year she was the gardener in residence at Anna Tasca Lanza cooking school in Vallelunga, Sicily where she co-managed the heritage garden focusing on plants traditionally used for medicine and crafting. Not coincidentally, the same plants helped her get through a sickness that resulted from burn-out farming and, on the same piece of land her ancestors once sharecropped. To give insight into the delicate and rough ways of how this land is evolving with its people is a dream for Lucia. Big shoutout and appreciation to all the guidance and support she's been receiving along the way!
Giuseppe Sangiorgi
A Sicilian actor, writer, director, and teacher with over 20 years of experience in the Italian entertainment industry. He trained at the Teates Theater School in Palermo; he works as a theater actor with Antonio Latella, Isabella Ragonese, Marco Baliani, Vincenzo Pirrotta, Giorgio Barberio Corsetti, Emma Dante, and Massimo Verdastro, with whom he also collaborates as assistant director and choreographer. He works as a dancer
with the Abbondanza / Bertoni Company, Jacqueline Bulnes (soloist of the M. Graham Company) and Alessandra Fazzino. He writes and directs the shows Studio for Double Bass, based on P. Suskin and Sweet Transvestites, by W. Shakespeare. Always in the theater, he leads educational projects for theater schools, professional companies, and theater workshops. Among the most important experiences of his film acting career are: Febbre da fieno (Hay fever) of Laura Luchetti, La mafia uccide solo d'estate (The mafia kills only in summer) by PIF, Nuovomondo (The golden door) by Emanuele Crialese, La Stranezza (The strangeness) by Roberto Andò. In 2020 he made a documentary and a photographic exhibition
dedicated to the history of Valledolmo entitled Maravigghia. He has written and directed two short films: All this was once oaks, and Recomaterna, hosted in some national and international festivals.

Alessia Siragusa
La nostra narratrice e traduttrice Alessia è una 24enne Siciliana che vive a Valledolmo, Sicilia che ha sempre vissuto nel suo piccolo paesino, Valledolmo, nel centro della Sicilia, circondato da campi di grano e pecore. L’economia della sua zona è basata soprattutto sull’agricoltura e l’artigianato. Le piace recitare e fare laboratori teatrali e qualsiasi cosa che abbia a che fare col cinema/films. Si sente molto grata di condividere la sua conoscenza attraverso questo film e anche molto felice di lavorare e apprendere da Lucia e Giuseppe.
Lucia Mauro
Lucia è un’apprendista regista/produttrice/editrice. Una semi-prima generazione di Siciliana-Americana cresciuta nel territorio occupato di Kizh su Turtle Island (Whittier, California), la creazione di questo film è la sintesi di tutto quello che lei ama; l’arte visiva, la cultura e la Terra. Lucia ha studiato ecologia durante gli ultimi 10 anni e ha lavorato attivamente nell’agricoltura e giardinaggio negli ultimi 6. Quest’anno passato è stata la giardiniera nella scuola di cucina Anna Tasca Lanza a Vallelunga, Sicilia dove ha co-gestito il giardino storico concentrandosi sulle piante tradizionalmente utilizzate per la medicina e l'artigianato. Non a caso, le stesse piante l’hanno aiutata a guarire da una malattia derivante da un burn-out dell’agricoltura e sullo stesso terreno dove un tempo i suoi antenati lavoravano come mezzadri. Dare un’idea di come, delicatamente e aspramente, questa terra si sta evolvendo è un sogno per Lucia. Un grande ringraziamento e apprezzamento per tutta la guida e il supporto che ha ricevuto lungo il percorso!
Giuseppe Sangiorgi
Attore, scrittore, regista e insegnante siciliano con oltre 20 anni di esperienza nel settore dello spettacolo italiano. Si forma alla Scuola Teatrale Teates di Palermo; lavora come attore teatrale con Antonio Latella, Isabella Ragonese, Marco Baliani, Vincenzo Pirrotta, Giorgio Barberio Corsetti, Emma Dante e Massimo Verdastro, con il quale collabora anche come assistente alla regia e coreografo. Lavora come ballerino con la Compagnia Abbondanza/Bertoni, Jacqueline Bulnes (solista della Compagnia M. Graham) e Alessandra Fazzino. Scrive e dirige gli spettacoli Studio for Double Bass, tratti da P. Suskin e Sweet Transvestites, di W. Shakespeare. Sempre in teatro, conduce progetti didattici per scuole di teatro, compagnie professionali e laboratori teatrali. Tra le esperienze più importanti della sua carriera di attore cinematografico ricordiamo: Febbre da fieno di Laura Luchetti, La mafia uccide solo d'estate di PIF, Nuovomondo di Emanuele Crialese , La Stranezza di Roberto Andò. Nel 2020 ha realizzato un documentario e una mostra fotografica dedicati alla storia di Valledolmo dal titolo Maravigghia. Ha scritto e diretto due cortometraggi: Tutto questo una volta erano querce ( All this once were oaks), e Recomaterna, ospitato in alcuni festival nazionali e internazionali.
