The Story

This web series follows Scotty and Riley, two 20-somethings in New York who find themselves randomly paired together as roommates in a 450 square-foot Hell's Kitchen apartment. Scotty and Riley immediately hit it off, but there's one problem: Riley's long-distance girlfriend who goes to college upstate. And They Were Roommates explores the ups and downs of living just one wall away from someone you could be in love with, and the seemingly never-ending torment of looking for love in New York City.

I've been an avid rom-com fan for as long as I can remember, and I know the appetite is out there for more of this genre because of my field research (talking to my friends). It's fun to watch a love story unfold, and even more fun to see yourself reflected in the characters on screen. Having been a voracious consumer of this genre all my life, I've developed a sensibility of what I both expect and love to see in a rom-com, so I started writing my own.

Between rising costs of ever-evolving streaming services, current economic uncertainty, and the slowest job market in entertainment media I've ever seen, I decided to take matters into my own hands. I want this show to be accessible, free to watch and view at your leisure, no pay wall, on whatever device you want. With good story, good creatives, and good actors, it's not hard to make something compelling on a low budget. Our budget is the lowest you can possibly have and still work with members of the Screen Actors Guild, so we are literally making this for as little money as possible, knowing that more $$ doesn't always = better quality art.
Currently we're producing five episodes on this budget, but if we do this right, down the road, who knows...there could be more!
My first foray into directing and writing was a scene I titled "Dinner With Parents," which you can watch here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AkfkvR_gEg0.
Dinner With Parents was shot by Nick Z. Miller, who I will be working with again on And They Were Roommates, so you know it's going to look good. We are excited to bring this web series to you, our audience, and can't thank you enough for your support. Thank you, thank you for your donations, and keep an eye out for And They Were Roommates, coming later this year!
xoxo,
Emily

Cast salaries
Costs $1,500
We have a cast of about 8 characters and want them to be paid, even on an ultra low budget.
Crew salaries
Costs $7,000
Sound, lighting, and camera work are all crucial to making this a great show, and we need to compensate our crew for their hard work!
Wardrobe/Hair/Makeup
Costs $1,000
We will be doing a lot of sourcing from our actor's closets for this project, but will require buying a few key pieces.
Locations
Costs $2,000
Again, we will be using mostly actor's real apartments for locations, but will need to rent out some locations, such as a bar and a diner.

Our cast and crew need to EAT! If we film for 10 days, this allows us to spend 150$ per day to make sure we have food and water.
Set/Props

We're already sourcing things on eBay and will need a small budget to purchase key prop items.
Post-production
Costs $1,000

Miscellaneous
Costs $2,000
This miscellaneous budget allows a fund for unexpected costs, re-shoots, overtime, festival entry fees, etc.

About This Team

Nick Z. Miller and I first collaborated on my first short film, Dinner With Parents, and we're excited to expand our work into long-form storytelling. A seasoned director of photography with over a decade of experience in TV and film, Nick has served as DP on notable documentary projects like Cowboy Cartel (Apple TV+), Hillsong: A Megachurch Exposed (Discovery+), among others.

Holly Lyons is a stylist, model, graphic designer, painter, web developer, and most importantly, my sister! She will be consulting creatively on the project, serving as part art director, part wardrobe stylist. Check out her vibe on IG: @hllylyns.

Kendall Slocum is signed on to play our lead, Riley, along side me as Scotty. Kendall and I met in acting class in 2024, there were supposed to be 8-10 people in the class, but sometimes it would only end up being us two. We quickly got to know a lot about each other as actors that way, and have been friends ever since!
Kendall is a New York based actor, you might recognize him from a recent episode of Law & Order: Organized Crime, or as the internet's commercial heartthrob, known as the 'Grammarly Guy.'

And then there's me, Emily Rose Lyons. I've been acting professionally since 2017, but have recently found myself writing again. I have been a writer since I could hold a pencil, but have never shared my work with the world...until now!
We have an amazing team of artists already, and have many more exciting casting announcements to make down the road!
