The Story

At Skyway Healthcare, front desk receptionists Jan, Marcella, and Mabel are the welcoming faces that greet patients as they step through the door. Throughout her shift, Jan navigates a stream of eccentric patients while juggling a plethora of varied tasks from collecting stool samples, to writing condolence cards, to helping frustrated patients. What appears to be a routine day quickly spirals into chaos when a regular, Miss Miller, is turned away due to changes in her insurance that conflict with the clinic’s policies. We learn that the treatment Miss Miller was receiving was crucial to her health. Frustrated and upset, Miss Miller becomes hysterical, causing a scene that draws in the involvement of everyone at the clinic.

During the writer’s strikes it was very hard to find a job in my industry. As the weeks passed and opportunities remained unknown, desperation set in. I eventually moved back home to Florida, and applied for a job as a front desk receptionist at our town’s health clinic. What I hadn’t anticipated was the profound challenge this role would present, as I experienced firsthand the stark realities that even a small town clinic faces under the current insurance system. As the receptionist, I witnessed countless patients facing difficult circumstances who I would often have to turn away due to us being unable to continue taking their insurance. One of the hardest moments I faced was having to deny care to a patient due to their insurance no longer being acceptable. The next time I heard that patient's name mentioned was when I was asked to sign a condolence card for their family. There really isn’t anything that can prepare you for the weight something like that puts on you, and it was the moment that really opened my eyes to the difficulties and emotional weight carried by healthcare professionals. That is the heart at the center of And Your Date of Birth, and it is what I am aiming to capture with this film.
Everyone knows someone who has been impacted by our healthcare system. It is the largest crisis our country faces, so I believe this is something worth highlighting.
