The Story

A miracle in Tokyo… delivered by the Virgin Mary?

Apparition is a modern-day magical realism short film set in Tokyo, where a desperate family prays for divine intervention to save their failing izakaya restaurant. To their shock, a mysterious foreign divinity appears to answer their prayers: the Virgin Mary, arriving with a glowing crown and a message of universal love.
Although sales improve, the family’s problems multiply. Meanwhile, Mary’s message doesn’t quite land in her new environment.
The film is quirky, tender, and full of heart. It's about feeling misplaced, culture out of context, and the courage to be seen. What happens when our inherited beliefs crash into unfamiliar realities? And how do we move forward in a world where everyone is clinging to their tribe?

Back in 2007, I was an exchange student in Tokyo. One day, while eating at a Mexican restaurant, I saw a cartoonish drawing of the Virgin Mary with a speech bubble promoting the daily specials. It cracked me up—this sacred icon totally out of context. It got me thinking: what if the actual Virgin Mary appeared in modern-day Tokyo? What would happen? What would her message be?
That moment planted the seed for Apparition. But for over a decade, I sat on the idea, too afraid to take action, telling myself all kinds of excuses about why I couldn’t make films.
Something kept pulling me toward the film’s central image, but I didn’t know what it meant—or how to follow it. Then, in early 2023, I was unexpectedly diagnosed with valve disease and had open-heart surgery later that year. That experience forced me to reassess everything. I made a promise to myself: I would go back to Tokyo and shoot the film within two months—finished script or not.
What followed was a whirlwind. I found the cast, the crew, the locations, the costumes, the permits. But the real heavy lifting was internal: showing up despite imposter syndrome, trusting my vision when I got stuck, letting go of perfectionism in favor of momentum. One by one, I got to examine, process, and heal so many of the limiting beliefs that had kept me blocked for years. That was my own personal miracle.
So vulnerability—and the fear of being seen and misunderstood—became central to Apparition. But the story also touches on larger themes: polarization, cultural friction, tradition vs. transformation. As we become more global and interdependent, our destinies are intertwined. Apparition imagines a relationship with the divine that is playful, inclusive, and adaptable. A kind of spirituality we need to cooperate and thrive in the 21st century.

For three days, our cast and crew poured their energy into the shoot. That alone felt like a miracle. The experience was rich with lessons and creative breakthroughs. But as I dove into editing, I started noticing more and more moments in the footage—details and choices that weren’t mine, but came from my collaborators. I felt deep gratitude. It really hit me: this was a work of collective authorship. That realization pushed me to dream bigger. That’s why I decided to run this campaign—to give Apparition the resources it deserves in post-production, and to honor the work of everyone who helped bring it to life.

His work explores identity, spirituality, and belonging—often through the lens of magical realism. Apparition is a personal milestone, created after years of creative block and a life-threatening heart surgery. The film is not just about miracles—it is one.

Beyond the film, making Apparition helped me unblock creatively. I discovered so many tools—psychological techniques, nervous system hacks, strategies for managing creative energy—that I believe can help other artists, too. So, if we reach our stretch goal of $20K, we’ll use the extra funds to develop The Poetic Toolbox—an online platform where artists can find creative tools and build community. Your support will not only help us finish the film—it will help others move through creative block and bring more meaningful art into the world.

We’ve locked picture. Now we’re ready for the final stages: sound design, color correction, music recording, and licensing. We expect to finalize the film by late November. After that, we’ll begin submitting to festivals—focusing on the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and Japan. Your contributions will cover submission fees, marketing, and travel, helping us expand the film’s reach. A public release is planned for summer 2026, with a screening event to follow. Here’s a pie chart outlining the budget breakdown. Our goal is to raise 15k Canadian dollars.

In a world where people cling to tribes and inherited identities for safety, Apparition offers a new kind of myth. It invites us to look at the sacred from a different angle.
Even as the future of art feels uncertain, we still have the power—as creators and audiences—to decide what stories get told.
So please join us. Help us explore something profound, in the silliest of ways. ;)

About This Team
Cuauhtémoc Velázquez – Director
Cuauhtémoc Velázquez is a Mexican-Canadian filmmaker whose work spans narrative film, documentary, and television. After studying at Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City and the New York Film Academy, he built a career that bridges cultures and disciplines: from news reporting at Canal Once, Mexico’s largest public broadcaster, to producing mini-documentaries on Japanese artisans for the Tokyo Conventions and Visitors Bureau. In Canada, his projects include The Queen of Color, supported by the Ontario Arts Council.
His stories explore themes of identity, spirituality, and belonging, often through the lens of magical realism. Apparition marks a turning point: after years of creative block and even a life-threatening open-heart surgery, Cuauhtémoc chose to embrace vulnerability and create against all odds. The film is not only a story about miracles—it is itself the result of one.
