The Story
What does it mean to build something, not just a house, but a legacy, a life?
Arable is a short psychological drama that follows a celebrated architect who finds obsessive solace in designing a home on a remote piece of farmland. As the walls rise around his vision, the real cracks begin to show not in the foundation he is building, but in the one he has neglected at home. This is a story about creative tunnel vision and the cost of pouring too much of ourselves into our work. It explores how passion, when left unchecked, can isolate us from the people we love. As artists, we understand that drive, the desire to control, to perfect, to build something lasting. Arable asks what happens when that drive becomes a form of escape.
Architecture is a specific discipline; those who become obsessed often feel the need to tend to it, isolating themselves from those who love them. In this case, Michael, Arable’s main character, suffers from his escape into his passion and must rebuild his foundation with his wife, Castelle.
We are telling this story on 16mm film to capture the tactile and imperfect texture of human emotion. The setting is rural and spare, with the landscape and architecture serving as extensions of the protagonist's internal world. It creates a world within a frame, something tangible, physical, and enduring, similar to architecture’s blueprints. Everything appears orderly on the surface, but it feels increasingly unlivable within.
We are currently in pre-production with a dedicated team of emerging filmmakers ready to bring this vision to life. Our largest production costs are tied to what makes Arable feel grounded and immersive. We are focused on finding the perfect house and field combination that not only supports the story but also becomes part of it. This also requires budgeting for film stock, processing, and scanning to fulfill our commitment to shooting on 16mm. Additionally, we are ensuring that our cast and crew have the necessary resources to work in a safe, focused, and well-supported environment. Architecture is innovation, and we plan to reflect that within our performances, our work ethic, and our presentation of Arable.
This film is about more than one man’s descent into obsession. It is about the ways we hide in our work and what it takes to return to the people we love. As Black filmmakers, we are creating this film to claim space in an industry that has not always welcomed our stories. Thank you for helping us make a film rooted in care, complexity, and truth.
