Mission Statement

Avalon deals with the ramifications of extreme poverty. Growing up in Maryland, both filmmakers were raised in the cross-section of high-profile extravagance and dilapidated row homes. The characters and the setting are inspired by what it's like to grow up surrounded by "America in Miniature".

The Story

Avalon is a film that Ryan and Seth have been working on for about half a year now. They are both film students at Towson University, a mid-sized liberal arts college located right outside of Baltimore, Maryland.

This film is being made with the help of their intermediate production class, which the program colloquially calls "Film 2". While both Seth and Ryan have been making films for a few years now, this is the first film they can really call their own.

Story

A weathered farmer, sequestered by his mistakes, is presented with an oppurtunity to save a young man's life and atone for his past.

Named after the island of Arthurian legend and Al Jolson's 1920 song, Avalon is a film that exists both in a timeless place and firmly in the strangeness of the Middle States. Middle States, especially Maryland, are the area of the United States that existed in the middle of the north and south during the Civil War. As a result, Maryland carries the spirit of southern independence as well as northern prosperity. The story of Avalon is not only about the dynamic between the characters, but the dychotomy of existence in this area of the world.

Since this is technically a project for a class, we are constantly updating our page as preproduction continues. In the weeks to come, we will make available a look book, a cinematographic breakdown, and references that we share with eachother on the team.

Cheers

About This Team

Ryan Mumaw (Co-Director/Writer)

Ryan Mumaw was born and raised in Frederick, Maryland and has since moved to Baltimore to study Electronic Media & Film at Towson University. During my time at Towson University I have worked on dozens of student films, indie features, professional sets, and music videos. Many of the films I've worked on in the past has recieved recognition from various film festivals.  Including Tyler Peterson's Leadbeater, Which was an official selection and the Maryland International Film Festival and Max Radbill's feature The Sisterhood of Girls Who Won't Date Me which was an official selection of the Miami Independent Film Festival.

I look forward to taking the skills I've learned on previous successful sets and using them to create my own work that I can be proud of.

Seth Herzog (Writer/Co-Director/Director of Photography)

Hello! My name is Seth and I'm a 19 year old filmmaker and student from Baltimore, Maryland. Since I was young, I always knew I wanted to be an artist, but it wasn't until my senior year of high school that I realized I wanted to be a filmmaker. My passion for drawing turned into a passion for painting, my passion for acting turned into a passion for directing, and my passion for photography turned into a passion for cinematography.

In my time at towson, I have worked on over twenty projects, ranging from shorts films to experimental films, music videos, and a handful of indie features. I have been working constantly to get more experience under my belt, and in 2017 alone I have shot thirteen short films and one music video.

When I'm not being a DP, I'm usually found working with other students and friends on their projects as an actor or assistant director, or in either the camera or lighting departments.

When I'm not doing any of that, you can probably find me in a booth at Denny's.
