Mission Statement

"Baby Shoes" aims to depict an accurate portrayal of impoverished living, as well as tell a heartfelt story of human compassion. Our crew of student filmmakers have been strengthening our production skills over the course of three years, and we can't wait to showcase what we've learned.

The Story

August, a teenage girl working a monotonous job in a grocery store, meets an impoverished woman with a baby during her shift. As their friendship grows, August learns more about the woman, and her experiences dealing with prejudice. When August learns that the woman does not have the means to afford basic care for her daughter, she offers to help her. When her disapproving manager finds out, August must choose between her job and doing the right thing.

Baby Shoes is a story about family, humanity, and the importance of togetherness in the face of adversity. It focuses on the push and pull between acting in good conscience and simply doing what’s expected of you. The film also revolves around the idea of what a person can do for someone else and how anyone can make an impact. This is what our crew is working to do - make an impact.

This is a deeply personal story to each member of our crew, which makes capturing this film so special to us.

As I begin to write this statement, I remember how this story started. It begins with 17-year-old me, sitting in my 12th grade English classroom, being told to write a short story in the last ten minutes of the class period. If you told that girl she would have adapted that into a screenplay and directing it with an incredibly talented group of filmmakers around me, she wouldn’t believe you.

The reason I loved the story so much three years ago when I made it and have an even greater love for it now is because this story doesn’t have an expiration date. This story will never be irrelevant. Poverty will always exist. Internal conflicts will never go away. People will always need to figure out how they handle situations. Everyone will forever continue to grow and learn. That’s what’s so perfect about this story - it’s real.

Telling this story as effectively and impactfully as possible is my biggest goal, and from our entire crew, we won’t stop working until we achieve that.

Development (March 2023 - August 2023)

Once we founded our core group, Carli began reworking and revising her original short story from 2021. In the time since, Baby Shoes has gone through numerous rewrites to make it the most accurate and compelling story it can be.

Pre-Production (August 2023 - January 2024)

Our crew has been working tirelessly in our roles to prepare for our production! We produced a short film, Hope, in the fall of 2023 to gain experience in our respective roles. Grace, our producer, has been scouting locations for our main backdrop, and working with the rest of the crew to create a realistic budget for the film. A.J. has been working with industry-grade equipment throughout the course of the semester to find out what best captures the look of "Baby Shoes". Meanwhile, Alexandra has been creating a shooting schedule, and Taylor has been forming a prop list and gathering items for our final production. Jack has also edited both of our previous projects (Hope and our promotional video), and has been developing a list of high-quality post-production gear that he will utilize for our final cut.

Post-Production (March 2024 - May 2024)

Once our shoot is wrapped, it is off to Jack for editing! Jack will be working with Carli to provide a professional sound mix and color grade to the film. Donors will also be receiving their incentive rewards during this time.
